Space Chess

Space Chess is a three-dimensional chess variant that challenges players to think beyond the traditional 64-square board. This game features three stacked 8×8 boards, introducing vertical movement and strategy into classic chess gameplay.

In Space Chess, pieces start on specific levels: White's pieces occupy the bottom board, while Black's are on the top. Each piece must make its first move to the middle level, with exceptions for the king and certain strategic considerations. Subsequent level changes are only permitted when landing on specially marked "star" squares (c3, c6, d4, d5, e4, e5, f3, f6). Kings have additional mobility options via "king" squares (f1 and f8), allowing them to shift levels under specific conditions.

Captures are constrained to the same level; a piece must be on the same board as its target to capture it. After capturing on a star square, a piece may choose to move up or down one or two levels, provided the destination square is unoccupied. Checkmates must be delivered by pieces all on the same level, and the checkmated king must have no legal moves, including level changes, to escape.

Space Chess offers a unique twist on traditional chess, requiring players to consider not just horizontal and vertical movements, but also the depth of the playing field. This added dimension introduces new strategic possibilities and challenges, making it a fascinating variant for chess enthusiasts seeking a novel experience.
