Players get a starting tile, scoring markers, money equal to 20+, four randomized market tiles, and a reserve board.
The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up Alhambra, each player receives a starting fountain tile, two matching wooden counters, and a tile reserve board displaying a points table and starting money. Players are dealt money cards face up until their total equals twenty or more. Four building tiles are drawn randomly from the bag and placed on the market board. A starting deck of money cards is divided into five piles with scoring cards inserted into the second and fourth positions, and the remaining money deck is set next to the market.
Objective
The main objective of Alhambra is to construct the most prestigious palace by acquiring and placing building tiles. Players compete to earn points by having the most tiles of each color, the longest continuous outer wall surrounding their palace, and the most variety of different building types. The player with the most total points at the end of the final scoring round wins the game.
On your turn
During a turn, a player may perform one of three actions: take money cards from the display up to a total of five (or any single card if no other options are available), buy a building tile from the market using the exact or higher currency matching its color and place it in their Alhambra or reserve, or redesign their palace by moving tiles between their board and reserve. If a player pays exact money, they earn an extra turn.
Scoring
Scoring happens during three random scoring periods triggered when specific scoring cards appear in the money deck. Points are awarded based on the majority of each tile color, the length of the longest continuous outer wall, and the number of different building types present. Later scoring rounds include rewards for second and eventually third place as the game progresses.
Game end
The game concludes immediately when there are no longer enough tiles remaining in the tile bag to replenish the market board. Once the final round scoring is completed after this trigger, the player with the highest total score wins. In the event of a tie among players, the victory is shared.
Tips
To maximize your chances, try to pay exact currency values whenever possible to gain bonus actions. Keep a close eye on your opponents' tile selections and wall layouts during scoring rounds, and ensure all newly placed tiles maintain open pathways to your fountain so future expansion remains legal.
