The rules, step by step
Setup
Each player receives a player board, a bag, and a set of starting resource tokens. These tokens are placed on the planning spaces of their player board. The game board is set up with various location tiles, each offering different actions and resources. The road track and market for extension strips are also prepared.
Objective
The objective of Altiplano is to be the player with the most victory points at the end of the game. Players achieve this by strategically gathering and managing resources, fulfilling orders, building houses, and utilizing their warehouse effectively to store valuable resources and complete rows for bonus points.
On your turn
Each round begins with players drawing a number of tokens from their personal bag, equal to their position on the road track. These tokens are then placed on their planning board to determine the actions they will take. Players then take actions one at a time by moving their worker to a corresponding location on the main board, discarding the planned tokens into a personal discard container, and gaining new resources into the same container. Players have one free movement to any location, with additional movements costing a pre-planned food token and being limited to adjacent tiles unless a cart has been invested in.
Scoring
At the end of the game, players gain victory points for all their resource tokens, both those stored in their warehouse and those in their bag or discard container. Additional points are awarded for completed rows in their warehouse, any end-game mission cards they have fulfilled, and any orders they have completed. Bonuses are also granted for houses built, which provide extra points for specific types of resources gathered. The player with the highest total score wins the game.
Game end
The game concludes when one of two conditions is met: either one of the seven location tiles on the main board is completely empty of its predetermined number of tokens and cards, or the market of extension strips cannot be refilled. Once either of these conditions is triggered, the current round is completed, and then one final round is played before proceeding to final scoring.
Tips
Players should optimize their actions by focusing on specific locations in a given round to maximize efficiency. It's also beneficial to plan ahead by placing resources into other locations for subsequent rounds, ensuring a steady supply for future actions. Players need to balance acquiring resources that are useful for trading and engine building (like alpacas, fish, or cocoa) with those that are worth more victory points directly (like cloth or glass). Utilizing the warehouse to thin out less valuable resources from circulation while still scoring points for them, and completing warehouse rows for additional points, is crucial for a strong end-game score.
