Setup

Assemble the modular game board, place time markers, product tiles, and pirate tiles, then distribute player boards, ships, trading posts, and village tiles to each player.

The rules, step by step

Setup
The game setup begins by assembling the modular game board, which will be different in each game. For a two-player game, use four corner frame pieces and nine map tiles. For three players, use four corner frame pieces, two middle frame pieces, and twelve map tiles. For four players, use all frame pieces and map tiles. Place time markers in ascending order on the board. Distribute product tiles randomly on designated spaces on the map. Place treasure chests on islands with 20 or more spaces. Shuffle pirate tiles and place five face-down on the storage board, revealing one randomly. Shuffle technology tiles and place eight face-down on the storage board, revealing four randomly. Each player receives a player board, two ships, 12 trading posts, 16 village tiles of their color, and two score markers. Place player discs on the special track of the storage board to determine turn order, and place one disc on the start of the score track on the player board.
Objective
The main objective in Amerigo is to accumulate the most victory points by the end of the game. Players achieve this by exploring new islands, establishing trading posts to create trade routes, and developing colonies through building villages and public buildings. Strategic planning and efficient use of action points are crucial for outmaneuvering opponents and maximizing point generation across the five rounds of play.
On your turn
Amerigo is played over five rounds, each consisting of seven phases. At the start of each phase, the first player rolls seven dice into a dice tower. The dice that exit the tower determine the available actions and the number of action points for that phase. Players take turns performing actions based on the colors of the dice. Actions include moving ships across the modular board, building trading posts on discovered islands, developing colonies by placing village tiles or public buildings, and gaining production tiles or technology tiles. The number of dice of a specific color determines the action points available for that action. If a player cannot or chooses not to use all their action points, they do not face any penalties.
Scoring
Victory points are awarded throughout the game and during a final scoring phase. Players earn points for building trading posts on islands (3 points for the first on an island), completing islands (3 points), collecting sets of goods (multiplied by the round number), advancing on technology tracks (points indicated on the track), and accumulating gold (1 point per gold at the end). Public buildings and certain technology tiles also provide additional points or benefits. The player with the most trading posts on a completed island also earns bonus points.
Game end
The game concludes after five full rounds. Once the fifth round is completed, players proceed to the final scoring phase. During this phase, players convert any remaining gold into victory points (1 gold = 1 VP). They also score points for their collected goods, advancements on technology tracks, and any other end-game scoring conditions specified on technology tiles or public buildings. The player with the highest total victory points is declared the winner of Amerigo.
Tips
To succeed in Amerigo, players should focus on efficient action point management, as the dice tower introduces an element of randomness that requires adaptability. Prioritize completing islands early to secure bonus points and control trade routes. Developing a balanced strategy between exploration, trade, and colony expansion is key. Pay attention to opponents' strategies and adjust your own to counter their moves, especially in contested areas or for valuable technology tiles. Don't underestimate the power of gold, as it converts directly into victory points at the end of the game.
