Antarctos: Icebound Checkers is a haunting variant of traditional Russian Checkers, steeped in the cosmic horror atmosphere of H.P. Lovecraft's sonnets. The game transports players to a frozen wasteland where reality wears thin and the ice conceals ancient, slumbering terrors. But beneath this chilling veneer lies a elegantly twisted strategy game that transforms every captured piece into a tactical resource.

The core mechanic is "freezing." When a piece is captured, it is not removed from the board. Instead, it is turned upside down and becomes neutral "ice" — a frozen monument belonging to no player. Ice cannot move or capture, but any player can jump over it in any direction (forward or backward) as a springboard. Once used, the ice immediately melts and is removed from play.

Unlike standard checkers, there are no kings. The path to victory is singular and ruthless: be the first to march one of your living pieces to the opponent's home row. A piece that reaches the edge wins instantly — no promotion, no second chances. However, if a piece touches the last row but continues moving (by capturing backward), victory is delayed until it stops there.

QUICK RULES Antarctos: Icebound Checkers

WHAT YOU NEED A standard 8x8 checkerboard 24 pieces (12 white, 12 black)

OBJECT OF THE GAME Be the first to bring one of your living pieces to the opponent's last row: White — to the 8th row Black — to the 1st row There are no kings. A piece that reaches the edge immediately wins the game.

BASIC RULES

  1. Moves A simple piece moves only forward one square diagonally. Moving backward is not allowed, except when capturing or jumping over a frozen piece ("ice").

  2. Freezing When a piece is captured, it is not removed from the board. Instead, it is turned upside down. This is now a frozen piece ("ice"). Ice is neutral: it belongs to no one. Ice disappears (is removed from the board) immediately after someone jumps over it.

  3. Priority: The Living Over the Dead If your piece can capture a living enemy piece — you must do so. No jumps over ice are allowed as long as there is a possible capture.

  4. Capture Captures can be made forward and backward. After the first capture, the attacking piece must continue capturing as long as there are living enemies. If ice is encountered during a capture chain, it must be jumped over (and is removed immediately). "Turkish shot" rule: You cannot jump over the same piece (living or frozen) twice in a single turn.

  5. Ice Breaking (When No Enemies Are Near) — You may jump over frozen pieces (your own or your opponent's) forward and backward. Jumping over a frozen piece is not mandatory unless it is part of a jump/capture chain. — This counts as a quiet move, but the frozen piece is removed from the board. — If another frozen piece is reachable after the jump — you must keep jumping. — But! If after a jump you land next to a living enemy — you must capture it.

WHEN THE GAME ENDS Breakthrough Victory — You are the first to reach the opponent's edge. Total Freeze — Your opponent has no living pieces left. No Moves Left — Your opponent has pieces but nowhere to move (blocked by ice or occupied squares).

IMPORTANT A piece that reaches the last row but leaves it in the same turn (by capturing backward) does not win until it stops there. Ice is both friend and foe. It can launch you forward — or give your opponent a springboard to your doom.
