Setup
Players each place a single city tile on the central map, setting up a starting zone of control two hexes away, alongside an empty 7x7 city map on their player board.
The rules, step by step
Setup
In Antiquity, setup begins by assembling the central modular map tile hexes. Each player receives a player board with an empty 7x7 city map and places their starting city on the map, establishing a zone of control two hexes away from their city, excluding water hexes. Players also set up their initial worker supplies, housing tracks, and various building tiles.
Objective
The ultimate objective of Antiquity is to build a cathedral in your city and dedicate it to one of five patron saints, each providing a unique win condition. The first player to successfully complete their saint's requirements at the end of a round wins the game.
On your turn
The game is played in rounds, each broken down into several distinct phases: collecting workers, secretly planning and placing city buildings, determining player turn order based on cart shops and explorers, building countryside structures like farms and mines, storing and harvesting goods, dealing with famine and pollution, and checking for a winner. Players must carefully balance city expansion with resource management and environmental impact.
Scoring
Antiquity does not feature a traditional point-scoring system. Instead, victory is strictly condition-based, requiring players to achieve specific strategic milestones tied to their chosen cathedral saint, such as controlling the most area or having specific goods in storage.
Game end
The game concludes as soon as any player completes all requirements for their chosen patron saint at the end of a round. If multiple players achieve their condition on the same turn, the player with the most unpolluted hexes in their zone of control wins.
Tips
Success in Antiquity requires careful spatial planning and pollution control. Because exploiting the environment generates pollution and famine, players must strategically build hospitals, dumps, and fountains, and utilize science faculties like biology and alchemy to mitigate negative effects and optimize resource harvesting.
