The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up Bärenpark, first lay out the main tile board. Stack all tiles by their type onto their corresponding locations on the board, ensuring that the highest value tiles are on top and values descend downwards. Place the bear statues in numerical order near the board. The number of tiles and statues used depends on the number of players, so consult the rulebook. Each player receives a random park entrance tile and places it with the entrance closest to them. The first player takes a single-square toilet tile, the second and third players take a two-square playground tile, and the final player takes a food street tile, placing these in their reserve.
Objective
The main objective of Bärenpark is to construct the most impressive and highest-scoring bear zoo. Players achieve this by strategically placing tiles to cover spaces on their park boards, earn bear statues, and potentially complete achievement objectives (in advanced play) to accumulate the most points by the end of the game.
On your turn
On a player's turn, they must place a single tile from their reserve into their park. The first tile can be placed anywhere, but subsequent tiles must touch an existing tile's edge. Tiles can be rotated freely but cannot overlap other tiles or cover statue spots. If a tile covers an icon (wheelbarrow, cement mixer, or digger), the player immediately takes a new tile from the corresponding section on the tile board. Covering a worker icon allows a player to add a new park tile to their park, up to a maximum of four. If a player cannot place a tile, they skip their turn and take a green area tile into their reserve.
Scoring
Points are scored at the end of the game. Players earn points for each covered enclosure space in their zoo, with different enclosures providing varying point values. Additionally, players score points for each bear statue they have collected. In advanced rules, any claimed achievement tiles also contribute to a player's total score. The player with the highest total score wins. In case of a tie, the player with the most points from tiles in their reserve wins.
Game end
The game concludes when any player successfully covers all spaces on their four park tiles. Once this happens, all other players get one final turn to place tiles. After everyone has had their last turn, players calculate their final scores based on their covered enclosures, collected bear statues, and any achievement tiles (if applicable).
Tips
When playing, remember that you can rotate tiles in any direction to fit them into your park. Prioritize covering icons to gain new tiles, especially the digger icon which offers the most flexibility in tile choice. Aim to fully cover park tiles as quickly as possible to claim the highest-value bear statues. In advanced games, keep an eye on the achievement tiles and try to complete their objectives to earn extra points, but remember you can only claim each different objective once.
