Black Sonata

To set up, first, randomly select one Dark Lady card from a deck of 12 to be the target. Each Dark Lady card has a unique combination of three traits from a total of seven possible traits. The Stealth Deck is then prepared by arranging specific cards in a predetermined sequence, which dictates the Dark Lady's movements. Players choose a starting location for their pawn, and the Dark Lady's pawn is placed on one of four possible starting locations marked with a house symbol. The corresponding location key cards are placed on the board, and the remaining trait tokens are set aside.

The primary objective of Black Sonata is to deduce the identity of the hidden Dark Lady. This is achieved by gathering clues about her traits and tracking her movements across the map of Shakespeare's London. Players must use logical deduction to narrow down the possibilities until they can confidently declare her identity by correctly identifying her three unique traits.

A game turn consists of two phases: the Dark Lady's movement and the player's action. The Dark Lady moves first, secretly advancing her pawn to an adjacent location determined by the top card of the Stealth Deck. Players only see the symbol of the location she moves to, not the specific location itself. Then, the player takes one of four actions: move their pawn to an adjacent location, search for the Dark Lady at their current location (if not a Fog Card), use a Fog Card's action, or pass. Successfully searching for the Dark Lady yields a clue card, which provides information about how many traits a specific character shares with the Dark Lady.

Scoring is based on how efficiently the Dark Lady's identity is revealed. Players count the number of cards remaining in the Stealth Deck, multiplied by the current countdown number. Additionally, points are awarded for any unused Fog Cards. The total score determines the player's rank, ranging from 'Unsuccessful' to 'Immortal Bard', reflecting their deductive prowess and efficiency in finding the Dark Lady.

The game concludes in one of two ways: either the player successfully identifies the Dark Lady, or the Stealth Deck's countdown reaches zero. If the player correctly identifies the Dark Lady, they win. If the countdown reaches zero before the Dark Lady is identified, the player loses. The game also ends if a player attempts a final guess and is incorrect.
