The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up the game, each player selects a side, either the Axis or the Allies, and receives a corresponding bag filled with their unit tokens. Players then place their battle track markers at the starting position of each of the five campaign tracks on the game board. The game board is double-sided, offering different campaign layouts for varied gameplay.
Objective
The primary objective in Blitzkrieg! is to accumulate 25 points on the War Victory Track before your opponent does. Players achieve this by strategically winning campaigns and utilizing various battle space effects throughout the game.
On your turn
A player's turn consists of drawing a unit token from their bag and placing it on an empty battle space in the first row of any of the five campaigns. Naval units can only be placed on blue spaces, army units on brown spaces, while air force units can be placed on either. Mixed-color spaces can accommodate any unit type. After placing a unit, the player moves their token on the battle track of that campaign equal to the value on the unit token. Additionally, any battle space effect on the covered space is immediately carried out.
Scoring
Scoring occurs in two main ways: by advancing your marker on the battle tracks and by closing out campaigns. When a unit is placed, your battle track marker advances, contributing to your score. If your marker is on your side of the battle track when a campaign is closed out (either by filling all spaces or by maxing out the track), you score the appropriate points for that campaign, plus any bonuses indicated on the track. Closing a campaign also makes the next one accessible.
Game end
The game concludes when one player successfully reaches 25 points on the War Victory Track. If the Axis player achieves this first, the Allied player is granted one final turn to attempt to match or surpass the Axis's score. If the Allies reach 25 points first, the game ends immediately. If a player manages to max out a battle track in any theater of operations, they close down any remaining campaigns, gaining the benefits of unclaimed battle spaces in any order, as well as any remaining War Victory Track points.
Tips
To excel in Blitzkrieg!, players should focus on a balanced strategy of unit placement and effect utilization. Understanding which unit types are best suited for blue (naval) or brown (land) spaces, and leveraging air forces for flexibility, is crucial. Prioritize battle space effects that either bolster your reserve, deplete your opponent's, grant new research tokens, or provide bonus bumps on battle tracks or the War Victory Track. Strategic campaign closure is also key to maximizing points and controlling the flow of the game.
