Setup
Players each take 21 colored pieces; in a two-player game, each controls two colors, and blue starts in the corner.
The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up a two-player game of Blokus, each participant manages two of the four available colors: blue and red for player one, and yellow and green for player two. Each player receives 21 unique geometric pieces. The blue player takes the first turn, placing their initial piece in their designated starting corner of the grid.
Objective
The main objective of Blokus is to fit as many of your 21 colored polyomino pieces onto the grid as possible. Players must simultaneously expand their own territory across the board and strategically block opponents from claiming valuable space.
On your turn
During a turn, a player must place a piece on the board according to one strict rule: new pieces must touch at least one previously played piece of the same color at the corners only. Edges of same-color pieces cannot touch. However, pieces of different colors may share edges. If a player has no legal moves remaining, they must pass.
Scoring
Scoring happens after the game concludes. Each player counts the total number of squares in all of their unused pieces, which are subtracted from zero to form a negative score. If a player successfully plays all 21 pieces, they receive a bonus of 15 points, with an extra 5 points if the very last piece played was the single-square tile.
Game end
The game ends once all players have run out of legal moves or have successfully placed all of their pieces onto the board, leaving no further valid placements possible for anyone.
Tips
A helpful strategy in Blokus is to deploy your awkward, odd-shaped pieces early in the game. As the board fills up and becomes more congested, maneuvering larger or unusual pieces gets significantly harder, making early placement key to avoiding a heavy point penalty at the end.
