Setup

Place cat scoring cards and corresponding cat tokens, button scoring card and button tokens, and the Master Quilter token in the center of the table. Each player chooses a quilt board and a set of six design goal tokens of their chosen color. Each player draws two patches from the bag, and three patches are drawn from the bag to form the market.

The rules, step by step

Setup
To set up the game, place the cat scoring cards (Millie, Tibbit, and Coconut for beginners, or all five for standard play) and their corresponding cat tokens in the center of the table. Place the button scoring card and all button tokens next to them. The Master Quilter token is also placed in the center. Each player selects a quilt board and a set of six design goal tokens of their chosen color. For beginners, specific design goals are placed on the board, while for standard play, players randomly select and place three design goals. Each player draws two patches from the bag to form their hand, and three patches are drawn from the bag to create the market.
Objective
The objective of Calico is to score the most points by strategically placing patches on your quilt board. Points are earned by completing design goals, attracting cats to your quilt, and sewing buttons onto your patches. The player who has accumulated the most points at the end of the game is declared the winner.
On your turn
A player's turn consists of two main steps: First, choose one patch from your hand and place it onto any empty space on your quilt board. After placing the patch, check if you have met the requirements to attract a cat or sew a button. If so, take the corresponding token and place it on your quilt. Second, draw a new patch from the market or the bag to replenish your hand. If you took a patch from the market, replace it with a new one from the bag.
Scoring
At the end of the game, points are tallied from three sources: Design goals award points based on the patterns and colors of the six patches surrounding them. Cats award points based on the size and pattern of the group of patches that attracted them. Buttons award 3 points each, with an additional rainbow button awarded for collecting one of each color. The player with the highest total score wins. In case of a tie, the player with the most cat tokens wins. If still tied, the player with the most button tokens wins. If the tie persists, the tied players share the victory.
Game end
The game concludes immediately when all players have successfully filled every space on their individual quilt boards with patches. Once all boards are full, players proceed to the final scoring phase to determine the winner.
Tips
To maximize your score, aim to fulfill design goals by matching both colors and patterns around them, as this yields the highest points. When attracting cats, focus on creating groups of patches that match their preferred patterns and shapes. For buttons, prioritize forming groups of three or more patches of the same color, and don't forget to collect one of each color to earn a valuable rainbow button. Remember that printed patches on your board count towards fulfilling goals, even if they are only partial.
