Setup

Place the canvas in the center, put four scoring cards on the designated spaces, arrange ribbons by color, shuffle art cards into the art box, and give each player three background cards and four inspiration tokens.

The rules, step by step

Setup
Place the canvas game board in the center of the playing area. Choose any four scoring cards and place them on the corresponding colored spaces on the canvas, or use a predefined scenario from the rulebook. Arrange the ribbons into five piles next to their corresponding symbols on the canvas. Shuffle all art cards and place them face-down into the art box. Place the art box in its designated space on the canvas. Draw five art cards and place them face-up on the spaces to the left of the art box. Each player takes three background cards and places them in front of them. The remaining background cards are returned to the box. Each player takes four inspiration tokens, and any remaining tokens are returned to the box.
Objective
In Canvas, you are a painter participating in an art festival. Throughout the game, you will collect art cards and layer them to create unique paintings with distinct titles. Your objective is to strategically combine these cards to fulfill scoring conditions and earn the most points by the end of the game.
On your turn
When it's your turn, you have two options: either take an art card or complete a painting. If you choose to take an art card, you can select any face-up art card from the display. If you choose a card that is not the leftmost one, you must place one inspiration token on each art card you skip over. After taking a card, slide the remaining cards to the left to fill any empty spaces, and draw a new art card from the art box to fill the rightmost empty space. If the chosen card had inspiration tokens on it, you collect those tokens. If you already have five art cards in your hand, you must choose to complete a painting. If you have fewer than five art cards, you can choose to complete a painting instead of taking an art card.
Scoring
To score a painting, compare the visible symbols on your completed painting with the conditions on the scoring cards. For each condition met, take the corresponding number of ribbons from the reserve. Some conditions can be met multiple times by a single painting, but each element (hue, shape, texture, tone) can only be counted once per scoring category. Additionally, collect one bonus ribbon for each element that matches a bonus symbol on your painting. At the end of the game, calculate your total score by adding the points from all your collected ribbons. Each regular ribbon's value is determined by the scoring card it came from, and each bonus ribbon is worth two points.
Game end
The game ends immediately when all players have completed three paintings. If you are the only player to have completed three paintings, your turn is skipped until all other players have also completed three paintings. Players then calculate their total scores by summing the points from their collected ribbons. The player with the highest total score is declared the winner. In case of a tie, the player with the most inspiration tokens wins. If there's still a tie, a neutral player can analyze the tied players' paintings to determine the winner, or players can agree to share the victory.
Tips
The art cards feature illustrations, a part of the title, and color swatches at the bottom. The color swatches are visual aids to help identify the fixed positions of symbols: red is always on the left, followed by yellow, green, blue, and purple. There are four types of symbols on art cards: hue, shape, texture, and tone, representing design elements. Each combination of these elements contributes to scoring. Bonus symbols on art cards allow you to gain additional ribbons. All art cards are covered with a transparent plastic film for protection during manufacturing; you can remove it if you wish, or it will naturally wear off over time. If you run out of ribbons of a certain color, you can use substitutes.
