The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up Captain Flip, each player chooses an adventure board (A, B, C, or D) and receives a player aid. The coins and treasure map are placed in the center of the table, and all crew tiles are put into the bag. The player with the pirate flag on their board goes first, and play proceeds clockwise.
Objective
The objective of Captain Flip is to collect the most coins by strategically recruiting and flipping pirate crew tiles on your ship board. Each tile has different abilities and scoring conditions that you must manage to maximize your coin count.
On your turn
On your turn, draw a crew tile from the bag at random, ensuring only one side is visible. You then have two choices: either place the tile into the lowest empty space of any column on your board, or flip the tile over to use the character on the other side. Once a tile is flipped, you must use the flipped side.
Scoring
Crew tiles have two types of effects: immediate and end-game. Tiles with a yellow box have an immediate effect that applies when placed. For example, the Cartographer lets you take the Treasure Map, which scores one coin at the end of each of your turns. The Navigator gives two coins for each Cartographer on your board. The Cook scores one coin for each character in their row, including themselves. The Gunner gives five coins but causes you to lose the game if you ever have three. The Monkey scores one coin and lets you flip an adjacent tile, applying its flipped effect immediately. Tiles with a gray box have an end-game effect that applies at the end of the game. These include the Parrot, which lets you draw and play a new tile when placed but loses you one coin at the game's end. Swabbies earn coins based on the number of columns that have a Swabby in them. The Carpenter scores three coins if there isn't a Gunner in their row or column. The Lookout scores four coins if it's at the top of its column.
Game end
The game ends when a player completely fills four columns on their board. After this, ensure that all players have had an equal number of turns. Then, apply all end-game effects for each tile and total up your coins. If using board C, remember to apply the covered tile bonuses as well.
Tips
Strategically choosing when to place a tile versus flipping it is crucial. Consider the immediate benefits of yellow-boxed tiles versus the end-game scoring potential of gray-boxed tiles. The Cartographer's Treasure Map provides ongoing income, while the Navigator benefits from multiple Cartographers. The Cook rewards rows with many characters, and the Monkey offers flexibility by allowing you to flip adjacent tiles. Be wary of the Gunner, as having three will lead to an instant loss. Swabbies encourage spreading your crew across columns, and Carpenters reward careful placement away from Gunners. The Lookout is best placed at the top of a column for maximum points. Don't forget to factor in the column completion bonuses, especially if using advanced boards like C.
