Setup
Players receive a hidden role card, a character identity card, health tokens, and a starting hand of playing cards.
The rules, step by step
Setup
The setup begins by selecting Alliance cards based on the number of players (e.g., for a 5-player game: 1 Captain Marvel, 1 Ally, 2 Skrulls, and 1 Skrull Defector). These are shuffled and dealt face-down to each player as their hidden identity. Captain Marvel reveals her card and takes the Captain Marvel Player Card, while other players take a generic Player Card. Identity cards are shuffled and dealt to each player (except Captain Marvel, who chooses a side of her player board). Each player takes health tokens equal to the symbols on their character identity card and places them on their player card. The playing cards are shuffled and dealt face-down to each player, equal to their starting health, forming their starting hand. The remaining playing cards form a draw pile in the center.
Objective
The objective of the game depends on the player's role. Captain Marvel and her Allies are attempting to defeat all the Skrulls, including the Skrull Defector, to win the game. The Skrulls must defeat Captain Marvel. The Skrull Defector must kill everyone and be the last Skrull standing to win.
On your turn
Gameplay occurs in turns, starting with Captain Marvel and proceeding clockwise. On a turn, the active player goes through three phases: Draw Two Cards, Play Cards, and Discard. In the Draw Two Cards step, the active player draws two cards. If the draw deck is depleted, the discard pile is shuffled to create a new draw deck. In the Play Cards step, the active player may play any number of cards from their hand to attack other players or provide themselves with equipment or healing. There are two types of cards: red cards (immediate effect, then discard) and blue cards (stay in play until removed by a game effect). Players must obey certain limitations: only one attack card per turn (unless specified otherwise), only one copy of each card type can be in play per player, and only one weapon per player. In the Discard phase, the active player discards any cards from their hand that exceed their hand size, which is equal to their current health.
Scoring
As players engage in combat, they will eventually lose health. When a player loses all their health, they are eliminated from the game. They reveal their Alliance card and discard their hand into the discard pile. The player who dealt the killing blow receives a penalty or reward depending on the character eliminated. If any player eliminates a Skrull, they draw three cards. If Captain Marvel eliminates an Ally, she must discard her hand and all her cards in play.
Game end
Play continues until a team or player completes their objective. The Skrull team wins if they destroy Captain Marvel and the Defector. The Skrull Defector wins if they are the only player remaining. Captain Marvel and her Allies win if they destroy all Skrulls in the game.
Tips
Range is a crucial mechanic in the game, representing the minimum number of spaces between two players, counting either clockwise or counterclockwise. This distance determines which weapons are usable on certain players relative to the active player's location. For example, in a 6-player game, if Player A is the active player, they can use cards with a range of 1 on Players B and F. Cards with a range of 2 can be used on Players C and E, and a weapon with a range of 3 is needed to reach Player D.
