The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers, place the special starting tile face up in the middle of the play area. Shuffle the regular land tiles and the special menhir tiles separately and place them in accessible stacks. Each player chooses a color and takes six tribe meeples and three huts. Place each player's scoring marker on the zero space of the scoreboard.
Objective
The goal is to score the most victory points by building a shared prehistoric world of rivers, lakes, forests, and grasslands. Players deploy their meeples to claim these landscape features, fish in waters, and hunt animals to outwit rival tribes before the game ends.
On your turn
A player's turn consists of three mandatory steps. First, draw a land tile from any stack and attach it to the existing landscape so all adjacent artwork matches. Second, you may place one meeple or hut from your supply onto a valid, unclaimed feature of the newly placed tile. Third, score any rivers or forests that were completed by this new tile placement.
Scoring
Rivers score points equal to the number of tiles plus fish. Forests score points per tile and grant a bonus turn if they contain a menhir. Standing meeples are retrieved after scoring. Grasslands and huts are not scored until the very end of the game; hunters score points for nearby animals while losing points for tigers, and huts score points based on fish in connected river systems.
Game end
The game continues clockwise until the final regular land tile has been placed. All incomplete features with standing meeples are ignored and removed. Final scoring takes place for huts across river systems and hunters controlling grasslands. The player with the highest total score wins the game.
Tips
Watch for opportunities to connect separate features later in the game to share or steal control of high-value rivers and forests from opponents. Pay close attention to tiger and deer placements in grasslands, as tigers cancel out deer and can ruin an otherwise lucrative hunting territory if not managed.
