Separate raw material cards from the deck, remove player-count-specific cards, distribute cost sheets, place market cards, and give each player a starting settlement, road, and three resources.
The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up the game, first separate all raw material cards from the main deck and form a separate pile. Depending on the number of players, remove specific cards marked with player count numbers from the deck. Give each player a summary sheet showing building costs. Place the card types—knights, roads, settlements, and city expansions—in designated spots in the center of the table, along with five face-up resource market cards. Before beginning, every player places one starting settlement and one road on side 'A' in their play area and draws three resource cards to start their hands.
Objective
The main objective of the Catan Card Game is to be the first player to accumulate 10 victory points. Players build up their principality by playing cards from their hand, expanding cities, building roads, and establishing new settlements.
On your turn
A player's turn is divided into three distinct phases. First is the trade phase, where players can trade raw materials using market cards, the general pile, or other players based on road card abilities. Second is the construction phase, where players pay the required material costs shown on their reference sheet to build roads, knights, settlements, or city expansions. Finally, the third phase is the draw phase, where players draw cards from the main deck, with additional cards drawn if they have active knight cards.
Scoring
Victory points are scored through the development of your principality. Settlements and roads provide initial points, while upgraded cities and various city expansion cards like universities, libraries, and town halls provide additional points that contribute towards the winning total.
Game end
The game concludes immediately during a player's turn the exact moment they successfully reach or exceed a total of 10 victory points. Once 10 points are achieved, opponents cannot retroactively steal or undo points to prevent victory.
Tips
Efficient trading is vital since you often lack required materials. Keep an eye on card limits when city expansion events trigger thief penalties. Build knights early to increase your card draw potential every turn.
