Setup
Each player gets a starting deck, a figure, and cubes for their health track; the board is set up with a main deck, a lineup of six cards, and reserve piles.
The rules, step by step
Setup
Each player begins with an identical starting deck of cards, a figure to place in the starting space of the board, and a supply of cubes in their color. Players also have a health track on the board associated with their color. The playing field includes a main deck of cards, from which a lineup of six cards will be available at the start of each turn. Reserve piles contain multiple copies of specific cards, always available for purchase, including the 'Goblin' monster card. Artifact tokens, each with a different point value, are placed on designated spaces on the board.
Objective
The objective of Clank! is to infiltrate Dragon Keep, steal an artifact, and escape without being destroyed by the dragon. The player who has the most points from cards, artifacts, and other tokens at the end of the game wins. However, if a player does not possess an artifact or is still in the depths of the dungeon when the game ends, their points do not matter, and they lose.
On your turn
On your turn, you draw a hand of five cards from your deck and must play all of them in any order. Cards have effects and special icons: 'boot' icons represent movement, allowing you to move your figure across connected spaces; 'sword' icons represent attack power, used to defeat monsters or negate damage when moving across monster-guarded paths; 'skill point' icons (blue diamond) are used to purchase new cards from the lineup or reserve piles, adding them to your discard pile. Any resources not spent are lost at the end of your turn. If your deck runs out, you reshuffle your discard pile to form a new one.
Scoring
Points are tallied at the end of the game from several sources: the total value of artifacts you've stolen, any loot tokens you've found, gold you've accumulated, and points from cards in your deck. Additionally, if you successfully escape with an artifact, you receive an additional 20 points from a 'mastery token'. The player with the highest total score wins, provided they have an artifact and are not eliminated or still in the depths of the dungeon.
Game end
The game ends when one of two conditions is met: either a player successfully escapes the dungeon with an artifact or is eliminated from the game by taking too much damage. Alternatively, the game ends if the dragon attacks enough times (reaching the fifth space on the escape track) to eliminate everyone still inside the dungeon. Once the game ends, all remaining players (who are not eliminated and have an artifact if they were in the depths) count up their points.
Tips
When playing cards, if they have a 'Clank!' effect, you generate clank by adding one of your cubes to the clank section of the board. This noise will attract the dragon. Conversely, cards with a 'minus clank' effect allow you to remove or prevent clank up to that amount for the turn. If a card has an 'acquire' effect, it occurs once as soon as you gain it. 'Arrive' effects on cards in the lineup take place as soon as they are revealed. Purple 'device' cards are not added to your deck; instead, their instructions are followed when purchased, and they are then discarded. Different board spaces offer various interactions: 'crystal cave' rooms require you to end your movement there, 'heart' icons let you heal one damage, 'question mark' tokens reveal minor or major secrets, and 'market' spaces allow you to use gold to purchase items like keys (to unlock paths), backpacks (to hold extra artifacts), or crowns (for points).
