How do you play Coatl?

The main objective of Coatl is to compete against your opponent to become the next Aztec high priest. Players achieve this by strategically drafting colorful feathered snake body parts—heads, tails, and body segments—from the central supply board to construct three complete Coatl sculptures that satisfy the complex requirements of various prophecy and temple cards.

Setup

Players get a player board, three prophecy cards, a temple card, and three sacrifice tokens, while the supply board holds mixed-color body parts.

The rules, step by step

Setup
Setting up a two-player game of Coatl involves providing each participant with a designated colored player board, three starting prophecy cards kept hidden in hand, one private temple card, and three unique sacrifice tokens. In the center of the table, the supply board is placed with its rotating rings populated with various colored body segments representing the Coatl's head, tail, and body pieces. Additional prophecy and temple decks are stacked nearby alongside bags containing spare pieces for refilling the supply board.
Objective
The main objective of Coatl is to compete against your opponent to become the next Aztec high priest. Players achieve this by strategically drafting colorful feathered snake body parts—heads, tails, and body segments—from the central supply board to construct three complete Coatl sculptures that satisfy the complex requirements of various prophecy and temple cards.
On your turn
During your turn, you must perform exactly one of three available actions: take body parts from the supply board into your player board storage, take prophecy cards into your hand, or build and score Coatl sculptures using your collected parts and cards. Players take turns sequentially until the end-game trigger is met, with no separate rounds.
Scoring
Scoring points in Coatl relies on matching your constructed Coatl sculptures to the pattern requirements shown on your prophecy and temple cards. Each prophecy card dictates specific color arrangements and orientations that your Coatl segments must follow to award points. Additional points can be earned by fulfilling temple card requirements when completing your Coatl sculptures.
Game end
The game ends immediately when any player successfully completes their third Coatl sculpture, or alternatively, if all body parts on the supply board are depleted. Following the end-game trigger, all remaining players finish their current turn structure, after which final end-game scoring is calculated from all completed Coatl sculptures, prophecy cards, and temple goals to determine the winner.
Tips
To succeed in Coatl, pay close attention to your secret prophecy cards early on so you can draft the right color sequences without wasting actions. Manage your player board storage space carefully since you cannot take new parts if your board is full, and utilize your sacrifice tokens wisely to manipulate the supply board or reserve key cards when needed.
