The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up Concept, unfold the game board and place it in the center of the table so all players can easily see and reach it. Take the deck of concept cards, leave them unshuffled, and place them face down on the designated space on the board. Each player or team takes the pawns and cubes of a specific color, placing the main question mark pawn and several small cubes nearby. Keep the bowl of multi-colored cubes and the double and single lightbulb point tokens readily accessible. Finally, distribute the two summary sheets to the players or teams so everyone has a reference guide for the icons, and you are ready to begin.
Objective
The main objective of Concept is to communicate various words, phrases, titles, or idioms to your fellow players without speaking, drawing, or using traditional charades, relying entirely on placing pieces on abstract icon categories.
On your turn
During a turn, the active players draw a card and secretly choose a word or phrase from it. They then place the main question mark pawn on the board to indicate the primary concept, followed by colored cubes on matching icons to add descriptive details, sub-concepts, and modifiers.
Scoring
Players around the table attempt to guess the concept by interpreting the placed pawns and cubes. The first player to correctly guess the word wins a double lightbulb token (2 points), and the players who successfully conveyed the concept each receive a single lightbulb token (1 point).
Game end
The game continues over multiple rounds as players take turns giving clues, and it naturally concludes when all the point tokens or a set number of cards have been played, after which scores are tallied.
Tips
For the best experience, start with easier words to get comfortable with the icon meanings, and remember that subtle cube placement can clarify complex ideas much faster than over-complicating your board layout.
