Place the board, insert pegs, and each player takes 12 discs of the same color, positioning themselves at opposite quadrants.
The rules, step by step
Setup
Set up the Crokinole board by placing it on a stable surface and inserting the pegs into their designated holes near the center. Each player then selects 12 discs of a single color. Players position themselves at opposite quadrants of the board, with their discs ready for play.
Objective
The primary goal of Crokinole is to be the first player to accumulate a total of 100 or more points over multiple rounds of play.
On your turn
On your turn, you must shoot one of your discs by flicking it with your finger. All shots must originate from the outermost black edge of your quadrant, known as the shooting line. You can shoot from anywhere on this line as long as at least half of your disc is within your quadrant and some part of it touches the black shooting line. If there are no opponent discs on the board, it's a 'free shot,' and you can shoot towards the center without restriction. Otherwise, it's a 'regular shot,' and you must hit at least one opponent's disc, either directly with your shooting disc or indirectly by hitting another friendly disc that then contacts an opponent's disc. If you fail to hit an opponent's disc during a regular shot, your shot disc, along with any friendly discs it hit, are removed from the board and placed in the outer recessed ring, called 'the gutter.'
Scoring
At the end of each round, points are scored based on the final positions of the discs on the board. Any disc that successfully makes it into the center hole, without being removed to the gutter, is set aside and will be worth 20 points at the end of the game. Other discs score points according to the value of the ring they are in (5, 10, or 15). If a disc overlaps two rings, it scores for the lesser value. Discs that have been removed to the gutter are worth zero points.
Game end
Once all players have shot their 12 discs, the round concludes, and points are tallied. Calculate the total points for both players. The player with the higher total points for the round wins that round and receives points equal to the difference between their total and the opponent's total. The losing player for the round receives zero points. Scores are recorded, and a new round begins, with players alternating who shoots first. The game ends when a player reaches 100 or more points, declaring them the winner.
Tips
Crokinole can also be played with teams of two. In this variant, teammates position themselves at opposing quadrants of the board. Each player shoots six discs instead of 12, and the turn order proceeds clockwise around the board.
