How do you play Dead of Winter: The Long Night?

The primary goal for all players is to collectively achieve the main objective, which is publicly displayed on the board. In addition to this, each player receives a secret objective card that they must fulfill individually. These secret objectives often involve personal goals that may or may not align with the colony's overall well-being, introducing elements of cooperation and potential betrayal. To win, both the main objective and your personal secret objective must be completed. Failure to meet the main objective or allowing the colony's morale to drop to zero will result in a loss for all players, unless a player's secret objective allows for a traitor victory.

Setup

Choose to play either the base game or the Long Night expansion, then select your main objective card and place it on the board.

The rules, step by step

Setup
To begin, players choose whether to play the original Dead of Winter game or include the Long Night expansion. This choice is made via the settings panel, where you can enable or disable the Long Night. Next, select a main objective card from the available options and place it in its designated spot on the board. Players then choose their color and position at the table. After selecting your position, you will be dealt a hand of starting survivors and a secret objective card. Discard any unwanted survivor cards back into the deck, keeping two starting survivors. The game is now ready for initial setup and scripting.
Objective
The primary goal for all players is to collectively achieve the main objective, which is publicly displayed on the board. In addition to this, each player receives a secret objective card that they must fulfill individually. These secret objectives often involve personal goals that may or may not align with the colony's overall well-being, introducing elements of cooperation and potential betrayal. To win, both the main objective and your personal secret objective must be completed. Failure to meet the main objective or allowing the colony's morale to drop to zero will result in a loss for all players, unless a player's secret objective allows for a traitor victory.
On your turn
During a player's turn, they can perform various actions such as moving characters between locations, searching for items, attacking zombies, building barricades, or contributing resources to crises. Crossroads cards are automatically dealt at the start of each player's turn, presenting a narrative choice or event that can significantly impact the game. Players manage their hand of item cards, dice for actions, and the status of their survivors. Once a player has completed their actions, they hit a 'Turns' button at the top of the screen to advance the game, which automatically manages Crossroads cards for each player.
Scoring
Scoring in Dead of Winter is binary: either you win or you lose. Individual players win if they successfully complete their secret objective AND the main objective of the colony is also achieved. If the main objective fails, or if the colony's morale drops to zero, all players lose, unless a player's secret objective specifically allows them to win as a traitor under certain failure conditions. There are no points or competitive scoring beyond these win/loss conditions.
Game end
The game concludes in one of three ways: either the main objective is successfully completed, the main objective is failed, or the colony's morale track reaches zero. If the main objective is completed, players then check if they have met their individual secret objectives to determine personal victory. If the main objective fails or morale hits zero, all players typically lose, unless a traitor's secret objective is fulfilled under these circumstances. The game is designed for a definitive end state based on these conditions.
Tips
The Tabletop Simulator version of Dead of Winter includes several scripted features to streamline gameplay. Utilize the settings panel to enable or disable the Long Night expansion and other modules like improvements, Raxxon, or bandits. The 'Start Game' button will automatically deal starting hands and secret objectives. After players have chosen their two starting survivors and discarded the rest, hit 'Spawn Survivors' to place them in the colony. Remember to enable 'Turns' from the Options menu so that Crossroads cards are automatically managed for each player. While many elements snap into place, you will need to manually manage food tokens, starvation tokens, barricades, and character movement around the board. Also, manually draw and resolve Crossroads cards if 'Turns' is not enabled.
