Setup
Build the shared map, place berry tokens, display story tiles and terrain cards, and give each player a tribe board, camps, and starting cards.
The rules, step by step
Setup
Setup begins by creating the game map using a randomized starting tile for each player and neutral tiles equal to the player count. Place two berry tokens on every visible symbol on the board. In the center of the table, place five faceup story tiles and six faceup terrain cards alongside the draw decks. Each player receives a tribe board and nine camps of their color: eight on designated board spaces and the ninth in the center of their starting tile. Players also draw two face-down terrain cards, and a starting player is chosen randomly to receive the Dewan token.
Objective
The main objective of Dewan is to score the most victory points by the end of the game. Players accomplish this by strategically placing their camps across different terrain types on the map, successfully completing story tile requirements, securing valuable resources like berries, and accumulating fire symbols on cards and completed stories.
On your turn
During a game turn, players must choose one of two primary actions: take cards or place one camp. To take cards, a player chooses two adjacent terrain cards from the visible row, adds them to their hand, and replaces them from the draw pile. To place a camp, a player chooses a starting camp on the map and a destination space, discarding terrain cards that match every terrain type crossed along the way. Special rules apply to water zones and opponent camps, and successful camp placement lets players collect berries, trigger board effects, and complete story tiles.
Scoring
Scoring takes place after the final round concludes and all non-completed story tiles are discarded. Players sum the points from their completed story tiles, earn points for fire symbols visible on completed tiles and tucked cards, gain points for groups of connected camps on the map, and score points for collected berry tokens and hidden berry symbols.
Game end
The game triggers its end condition the moment any player places their ninth and final camp on the map. The current round is then finished so that every participant has played an equal number of turns, before proceeding directly to the final scoring phase and determining the winner.
Tips
To maximize your chances of winning, coordinate your camp placements to satisfy multiple story tile requirements simultaneously. Keep a close eye on water zones to travel long distances with a single water card, and slide cards under your tribe board strategically to lock in extra resources and story requirements.
