Setup
Each player draws a card, and the player with the highest card is the dealer, who shuffles the deck and deals seven cards to each player, then places two cards face-up in the center to form the center row, and the remaining cards form the draw pile.
The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up the game, each player draws a card, and the player with the highest card becomes the dealer. Any symbol card is considered zero. The dealer shuffles the deck and deals seven cards to each player. After dealing, the dealer places two cards face-up in the middle of the playing area to form the center row. The remaining cards are placed face-down next to the center row to form the draw pile. The player to the dealer's left starts the game.
Objective
The main objective of DOS is to be the first player to reach 200 points. You earn points by being the first to get rid of all the cards in your hand in each round. The game continues over multiple rounds until one player accumulates 200 points or more.
On your turn
When it's your turn, you have two main actions: either match cards from your hand with cards in the center row or draw a card from the draw pile. Matching can be done in two ways: a single number match (play one card that matches the number of a card in the center row, regardless of color) or a double number match (play two cards that, when added together, match the number of a card in the center row). If your played card(s) also match the color of a center row card, you earn a color match bonus. If you cannot or choose not to make a match, you must draw one card from the draw pile. If you can make a match after drawing, you may do so. Otherwise, you place one card from your hand face-up into the center row.
Scoring
At the end of each round, the player who got rid of all their cards first earns points based on the cards remaining in other players' hands. Number cards (1-10) are worth their face value. The Wild DOS card is worth 20 points. The Wild Number card is worth 40 points. These points are tallied for the round winner.
Game end
A round concludes when a player successfully plays all the cards from their hand. The player who empties their hand first wins the round and scores points from the cards remaining in other players' hands. The winner of the previous round becomes the dealer for the next round. The game ends when any player reaches a total of 200 points. An alternative variant allows playing until a player reaches 222 points.
Tips
Special cards include the Wild DOS card, which acts as a '2' of any color, and the Wild Number card, which can represent any number from 1 to 10 for its respective color. When playing a Wild DOS card, you decide its color. When playing a Wild Number card, you decide its number. If a Wild DOS or Wild Number card is in the center row, you decide its color/number when making a match. If you have only two cards left in your hand, you must loudly declare 'DOS'. Failing to do so, and if another player calls 'DOS' before you, results in a penalty of drawing two cards from the draw pile. However, if this happens on your turn, you cannot draw penalty cards until your turn is complete.
