Place the game board in the center. Assemble the Ever Tree and place it on its designated spot. Arrange the resource tokens (twigs, resin, pebbles, berries) along the river. Place point tokens and occupied tokens near the board. Shuffle the forest cards and place them face-up in the forest clearings (3 for 2 players, 4 for 3-4 players), returning the rest to the box. Place the 4 basic event tiles along the river. Shuffle the special event cards and place 4 face-up on the Ever Tree branches, returning the rest to the box. Shuffle the main deck of cards and place 8 face-up in the meadow, then place the deck inside the Ever Tree. Each player chooses a color, takes 2 workers of that color, and places the remaining 4 workers on the Ever Tree branches (1 for spring, 1 for summer, 2 for autumn). The first player draws 5 cards, the second 6, the third 7, and the fourth 8.

The objective of Everdell is to build the most prosperous city by the time winter arrives. You will achieve this by strategically placing your workers to gather resources, playing creature and construction cards to expand your city, and completing events to earn victory points. The player with the most victory points at the end of the game wins.

On your turn, you can perform one of three actions: 1. Place a Worker: Place a worker on an available location (basic, forest, or destination card) to gain resources, draw cards, or activate abilities. Exclusive locations can only hold one worker, while common locations can hold multiple. Workers remain on locations until recalled. 2. Play a Card: Pay the resource cost of a creature or construction card from your hand or the meadow, and place it face-up in your city. Some creature cards can be played for free if you already have their associated construction in your city. 3. Prepare for the Next Season: This action can only be taken if all your workers are placed and you cannot or do not wish to play any more cards. You recall all your workers, gain new workers and/or draw cards based on the season, and activate any green production cards in your city.

At the end of the game, after all players have passed their turn for the autumn season, calculate your total victory points. Add the base victory points shown on your creature and construction cards. Add any bonus points from violet prosperity cards. Add points from completed basic and special event tokens. Add points from workers placed on journey locations. The player with the highest total score wins.

The game proceeds through four seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. A player's turn ends when they have placed all their workers and cannot or choose not to play any more cards, at which point they 'prepare for the next season'. The game concludes when all players have passed their turn after the autumn season. Players can be in different seasons simultaneously. If a player needs to offer cards or resources to another player who has already passed their turn, those cards are discarded, and resources are returned to the general supply. Once all players have passed their turn for autumn, final scoring begins.
