Setting up Firenze involves placing the central game board with card slots, score tracks, and resource bags in the center of the table. Each player receives a personal player board, a starting set of brick supplies, seal markers, and initial cards. The main deck of building and action cards is shuffled and placed on the board, ready to draw. The active card row is populated with cards and corresponding brick piles to initiate gameplay, ensuring all components are easily accessible for both players.

The main objective in Firenze is to construct towers in various colors across the city grid, earning victory points by meeting specific height requirements and fulfilling contract cards. Players must balance acquiring building materials, managing their hand of cards, and strategically timing tower construction to maximize points and outmaneuver their opponent before the final seal is placed.

A player's turn consists of six distinct phases: selecting a card from the market (paying costs with bricks if required), optionally exchanging bricks to optimize resources, building or adding to towers on your personal board, tearing down abandoned commissions if construction fails, fulfilling contracts to place seals on scoring tracks, and finally cleaning up by replenishing the card row and brick supplies for the next round.

Players score points throughout the game by completing tower levels, claiming bonus points for being the first to reach specific heights, and fulfilling special cathedral or workshop contracts. Additional points are awarded at the end of the game for remaining seals and bonuses, while penalties or negative points from certain cards are deducted from the final tally to determine the winner.

The game concludes immediately when a player successfully builds and seals the final tower on their board using all required components. Once the last seal is placed, players tally up any remaining endgame bonuses, and the player with the highest total score wins the game.
