Setting up FlipToons involves each player receiving a starter deck of 6 cartoon cards and organizing their play space with a 3x2 grid. A central display features various 'toons' available for hire, ranked by fame cost, along with player aid cards and scoring markers to track progress throughout the game.

The main objective of FlipToons is to assemble the greatest animated show by strategically building and refining your deck of cartoon characters. Players aim to accumulate the highest amount of fame by the end of the game through clever placement and card synergies.
On your turn
Each round consists of four phases: Flip, Check Fame, Market, and Cleanup. Players simultaneously flip their deck cards face down, reveal them in a specific order within their grid, calculate their fame, and then take up to two market actions to hire new toons or dismiss unwanted ones.
Scoring
Scoring happens during the Check Fame phase of every round. Players sum up the base fame values at the bottom of each card in their grid, incorporating any special abilities, adjacent modifiers, or unique card bonuses to determine their total fame for that round.
Game end
The game end is triggered when any player reaches or exceeds 30 fame during the Check Fame phase. After that round concludes, a final bonus flip occurs where the player holding the critic's choice card receives additional fame, and the player with the highest total fame wins.
