Setup

The campaign map tracks scenarios and buildings, with initial level 1 buildings (Barracks, Craftsman, Alchemist, Workshop) and level 0 resource buildings (Mining Camp, Logging Camp, Hunting Lodge) and wall sections.

The rules, step by step

Setup
The campaign map is used to track available scenarios and the current state of Frosthaven's buildings and features. Initially, Frosthaven has four level 1 buildings: the Barracks, Craftsman, Alchemist, and Workshop. The Building Deck contains a card for each of these. There are also level 0 resource buildings (Mining Camp, Logging Camp, Hunting Lodge) and wall sections on the map, representing locations where these can be constructed. The Campaign Sheet tracks overall progress, including the passage of time (divided into Summer and Winter, each 10 weeks), Frosthaven's collective resources (material and herb), Inspiration, Defense, Soldiers, Morale, Prosperity, and retired characters.

On your turn
The Outpost Phase, which occurs between scenarios (unless linked or replay situations apply), involves five distinct steps: 1. Passage of Time: Mark the next box on the calendar; if a box has section numbers, read those sections from the Section Book. 2. Outpost Event: Draw and resolve an Outpost Event card matching the current season, choosing an option and applying its outcome. 3. Building Operations: Resolve the effects of each building in the Building Deck in numerical order. 4. Downtime: Characters can perform various activities like leveling up, retiring, creating new characters, crafting items, brewing potions, and selling items. 5. Construction: The party can build, upgrade, or rebuild buildings using Frosthaven's resources, adhering to prosperity requirements and potentially spending Morale to construct a second building.
Scoring
Prosperity is tracked on the campaign sheet, increasing each time a numbered box is marked. The current Prosperity level determines the starting gold for new characters (20 gold + 10 gold per Prosperity level). It also dictates the Prosperity requirement for constructing and upgrading certain buildings. If a character's level is lower than half the new Prosperity level (rounded up) when Prosperity increases, they may immediately level up without meeting the experience requirement.
Game end
The game does not end after completing the main story of the campaign. Players can continue to play by tackling scenarios they haven't completed or replaying existing scenarios to unlock additional content. Characters level up by gaining experience points during scenarios and marking their new level during the Downtime step. When a character fulfills their personal quest, they must retire, which adds two Prosperity to the campaign and unlocks a new building envelope. Retiring characters also grant the player an extra perk mark for any new characters they create.
Tips
To maintain campaign progression, especially with fewer than four players, consider saving up Inspiration to complete additional Personal Quests. This strategy helps unlock new buildings and advance Frosthaven's Prosperity at a consistent pace, rather than solely relying on constructing buildings, which might be slower with fewer active characters.
