Ghost Stories is a cooperative game where all players win if they successfully defeat the incarnation of Wu-Feng. However, players lose if any of the following conditions occur: all Taoists die (a player runs out of 'C' tokens), the third village tile becomes haunted (flipped to its haunted side), or the ghost deck runs out of cards.

The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up, randomly arrange the nine village tiles into a 3x3 square. Place the colored player boards on the sides of this grid, choosing one of their two faces randomly. Each player selects a color and receives four 'C' tokens, one Yin-Yang token, one black Tao token, and one Tao token of their chosen color. All players then place their miniature in the center of the village grid. Finally, shuffle the ghost deck, and insert one random incarnation card 10 cards from the bottom of the deck.
Objective
Ghost Stories is a cooperative game where all players win if they successfully defeat the incarnation of Wu-Feng. However, players lose if any of the following conditions occur: all Taoists die (a player runs out of 'C' tokens), the third village tile becomes haunted (flipped to its haunted side), or the ghost deck runs out of cards.
On your turn
Each player's turn proceeds clockwise and is divided into two main phases: the Yin phase and the Yang phase. The Yin phase involves activating the central abilities of any ghosts on the player's board, drawing a new ghost card and placing it (or losing a 'C' token if the board is full), and then activating the left ability of the newly drawn ghost. The Yang phase allows for optional movement (one orthogonal or diagonal space), followed by a mandatory action: either asking for help from a villager (activating the effect of a village tile where the Taoist is located) or attempting an exorcism (rolling dice to match ghost requirements, using Tao tokens to supplement if needed). An optional Buddha can also be placed if possessed.
Scoring
There is no individual scoring in Ghost Stories. The game is entirely cooperative, meaning all players collectively achieve victory by defeating Wu-Feng's incarnation, or they all lose if any of the game-ending conditions for loss are met.
Game end
The game concludes immediately when either the players achieve victory by defeating Wu-Feng's incarnation, or they suffer a collective loss. Loss conditions include all Taoists dying (running out of 'C' tokens), the third village tile becoming haunted (flipped to its haunted side), or the ghost deck being completely depleted.
Tips
Yin-Yang tokens are versatile: they can be discarded during the Yang phase to either activate a villager's ability without being on their tile or to flip a haunted village tile back to its active side. Tao tokens are crucial for exorcisms, acting as wild cards to match required colors. In games with 1-3 players, unused player boards become neutral, having specific rules for ghost actions and C-token management. Neutral boards only activate their first Yin phase action (ghost movement) and apply malediction dice effects to themselves without losing Tao tokens. They cannot receive 'C' tokens, and if their 'C' tokens reach zero, they become 'possessed,' disabling their power and requiring other players to cover their 'C' losses. Neutral ability tokens allow active players to use a neutral board's ability in addition to their own.
