The rules, step by step
Setup
Begin by selecting one of the available heroes, each offering unique power-up cards, starting stats, dice, tactics, and allies. Record your chosen hero's initial movement speed, attack range, health, and leadership on the campaign tracker. Leadership determines the number of allies you can have in your camp. Prepare your hero's unique power-up cards, which can be acquired throughout the campaign to enhance your character's abilities. The combat system uses D6 rolls, with different colored dice (yellow, blue, green, black, red) having varying probabilities of success.
Objective
The primary objective is to complete a campaign consisting of four acts. Each act involves winning a series of skirmishes and ultimately defeating a boss. Successfully completing all four acts leads to a final confrontation with a powerful Scion. The campaign tracker helps monitor your progress through these acts and your hero's development.
On your turn
On your turn, you move your hero's marker on the world map to an adjacent point of interest. The symbol on the chosen point dictates the type of event you will encounter: a bloodshed event (combat-focused), a sporting event (objective-based skirmish), or an opportunity event (goals for hero upgrades). Each event card introduces specific modifiers to the skirmish rules, affecting both your units and the enemies.
Scoring
Winning skirmishes allows you to mark off chapters on your campaign tracker, progressing through the acts. Completing opportunity events grants 'prowess cards' or special allies and tactics chips, which upgrade your hero's abilities and add to your camp. In combat, success is determined by rolling dice, with hits reducing enemy health. Sporting events are non-lethal, meaning defeated allies return to your camp, while bloodshed events result in permanent loss of defeated units, which are added to the enemy bag for future encounters.
Game end
The game concludes in one of two ways: either you successfully defeat the ultimate boss, a Scion, after completing all four acts, or your hero is defeated in a bloodshed event, leading to an immediate campaign loss. Throughout the campaign, if your hero needs to heal, you can skip an event and mark a space on the Scion influence track. Marking a skull on this track, however, will add a 'bane chip' to the enemy bag, introducing negative modifiers to future skirmishes.
Tips
Strategically upgrade your hero's dice pool by adding new dice or improving existing ones to increase your chances of hitting in combat. Carefully manage your allies in your camp, as their numbers and abilities are crucial for success in skirmishes. Utilize tactics chips during combat to stun enemies, heal your units, or gain other advantages. Pay close attention to the event cards and arena rules, as they introduce unique modifiers that can significantly alter the flow and difficulty of each skirmish. Consider the implications of skipping events for healing, as it can lead to more challenging encounters later in the campaign.
