Imperial Steam

To set up Imperial Steam, unfold the large modular game board representing the Austro-Hungarian railway network and place all common supply boards nearby. Each player receives a personal player board, starting capital, warehouse tiles, and initial action markers. Resource cubes, track tiles, and train cards are sorted and placed on their designated board spaces. The turn-order marker and round tracker are set to their starting positions, preparing the table for a tight, highly strategic economic simulation.

The main objective of Imperial Steam is to build a thriving industrial and logistical empire. Players must construct railway tracks connecting various cities, purchase and upgrade powerful locomotives, hire workers, and manage the supply and demand of different goods. Ultimately, success is measured in wealth, so the player who accumulates the most money through clever contracts, timely deliveries, and efficient network management wins the game.

A game round consists of multiple phases where players take turns selecting distinct action spaces on the central board. Actions allow players to build track, acquire and improve trains, hire and position workers, import goods, and fulfill lucrative contracts. Because actions are limited and heavily contested, timing is everything. Players must carefully manage their cash flow, as taking out loans or failing to pay operational costs can severely penalize their final score.

Scoring in Imperial Steam happens both during the game and at the final conclusion. Throughout the rounds, players earn money by successfully delivering cubes of goods to connected cities and fulfilling specific contract requirements. At the end of the game, remaining cash, unfulfilled penalties, and bonus points from specific objectives are tallied. The player with the highest total capital after all deductions and additions claims victory.

The game concludes automatically at the end of a predetermined number of rounds, typically dictated by the game length variant chosen by the players. Once the final round's actions and deliveries are fully resolved, the end-game trigger initiates the final scoring sequence. Players convert leftover resources, settle any outstanding debts or loans, calculate final cash holdings, and determine who has built the most successful imperial railway enterprise.
