Setup
Set up the game board by placing the White Lion miniature in the center and each survivor miniature exactly six spaces away from it.
The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up the game, first, prepare the White Lion's AI deck by taking one of each basic card (Claw, Chomp, Size Up, Power Swat, Grasp) and one of each advanced card (Maul, Terrifying Roar, Enraged). No legendary cards are used in this scenario. Shuffle the basic and advanced AI cards together, then place the 'Claw' card on top of the shuffled deck. Place this face-down AI deck on the designated 'AI' area of the monster control panel. Next, prepare the Hit Location (HL) deck by setting aside the 'Strange Hand' card, shuffling the remaining HL cards, and placing them face-down on the 'HL' area of the monster control panel. Place the 'Strange Hand' card on top of the HL deck. Position the Basic Action and Monster Reference card for the White Lion on its designated spot on the monster control panel. Finally, place the White Lion miniature in the center of the showdown board, and each survivor miniature exactly six spaces away from the White Lion on any allowed square.
Objective
The primary objective of the game, as introduced in this segment, is for the survivors to engage in combat and defeat the White Lion. This is the first story in the game, focusing on the initial showdown phase.
On your turn
The game is played in rounds, with each round consisting of a monster turn followed by survivor turns. A 'Monster Controller' tile is passed clockwise to a new player each round. This player controls the monster's actions and reactions during the monster's turn, and also controls their own survivor. During the monster's turn, an AI card is drawn from the top of the AI deck. The monster controller then follows the instructions on the card to pick a target, move, and attack. The monster will prioritize targets based on specific criteria: closest threat facing and in range, then closest threat in field of view. If no target is found, the monster uses its 'Sniff' instinct, ending its turn and making all survivors threats for the next round. The monster moves efficiently towards its target, turning to face it, and attacks based on the speed, accuracy, and damage values on the AI card. If an attack misses, the monster proceeds to the next action on the card or discards it if no further actions are listed.
Scoring
This segment of the rules does not detail a specific scoring system. The focus is on combat mechanics and turn progression rather than points or victory conditions beyond defeating the monster.
Game end
The end condition for this specific showdown is implied to be the defeat of the White Lion or the elimination of all survivors. The video does not elaborate on broader game-ending conditions for the entire Kingdom Death: Monster campaign.
Tips
The Monster Controller has a special bonus: if they target their own survivor as the monster, they gain +1 insanity. When picking a target, 'closest threat' refers to the closest standing survivor, as knocked-down survivors are not considered threats. 'Facing' means any spaces directly in front of the monster, while 'in range' means within the monster's movement attribute (6 spaces for the White Lion in this scenario). The 'blind spot' consists of the two spaces directly behind the White Lion. When the monster uses its 'Sniff' instinct, it ends its turn, and all survivors become threats for the next round, regardless of their status (e.g., knocked down).
