How do you play Kingdomino?

The objective of Kingdomino is to become the most powerful monarch by building the most impressive 5x5 kingdom. This is achieved by strategically selecting and placing dominoes to create large, connected areas of matching terrain types, which are then multiplied by the number of crowns present in those areas to determine your final score.

Setup

Each player starts with a castle tile and a 1x1 starting board.

The rules, step by step

Setup
To set up Kingdomino, each player receives a castle tile, which serves as their starting point, and a 1x1 starting board. All dominoes are shuffled face down and placed in a draw pile. For a 2-player game, four dominoes are drawn and placed face up in ascending numerical order. For a 3 or 4-player game, the number of dominoes drawn and placed face up will vary, but they are always sorted by number.
Objective
The objective of Kingdomino is to become the most powerful monarch by building the most impressive 5x5 kingdom. This is achieved by strategically selecting and placing dominoes to create large, connected areas of matching terrain types, which are then multiplied by the number of crowns present in those areas to determine your final score.
On your turn
Each turn, players select a domino from the current row, starting with the player whose king is on the lowest-numbered domino from the previous round. After selecting a domino, players place their king on a domino in the next row, indicating their turn order for the following round. The selected domino is then added to their kingdom, ensuring at least one side of the new domino matches an adjacent terrain type in their existing kingdom. If a domino cannot be legally placed, it is discarded.
Scoring
At the end of the game, points are calculated for each contiguous area of matching terrain types within a player's 5x5 kingdom. The number of squares in each connected area is multiplied by the total number of crowns present on the dominoes within that area. For example, a forest of 5 squares with 2 crowns would score 10 points. Additionally, bonus points are awarded for completing a perfect 5x5 grid and for having your castle in the center of your kingdom.
Game end
The game concludes when all dominoes have been drawn and placed, or when a player is unable to make a legal placement for their chosen domino. Once all players have placed their final dominoes, or discarded them if no legal placement was possible, the scoring phase begins to determine the winner.
Tips
To maximize your score, focus on creating large, connected areas of a single terrain type, especially those with multiple crowns, as crowns act as multipliers. Pay attention to the dominoes available in the next row and anticipate your opponents' moves to secure the most valuable pieces. Also, try to keep your kingdom compact to avoid leaving unfillable gaps, which can reduce your final score.
