How do you play Kites?

The objective of Kites is a cooperative one: all players must work together to play all the kite cards from their hands and the draw pile before any of the sand timers run out completely. If you succeed, everyone wins! If even one sand timer runs out, everyone loses.

Setup

Place the six sand timers horizontally in the middle of the playing area, ensuring all sand is in one compartment; separate the 12 challenge cards from the kite cards.

The rules, step by step

Setup
Place the six sand timers horizontally in the middle of the playing area, making sure all the sand is in one compartment for each timer. Separate the 12 challenge cards (those with black pictograms) from the kite cards and set them aside for now. Shuffle all the kite cards and deal them face-down to each player: 5 cards for 2-3 players, 4 cards for 4 players, and 3 cards for 5-6 players. Place the remaining kite cards face-down in a draw pile accessible to all players, splitting it into two piles if necessary. Players should not look at their cards yet. Choose a first player (e.g., whoever last flew a kite or randomly).
Objective
The objective of Kites is a cooperative one: all players must work together to play all the kite cards from their hands and the draw pile before any of the sand timers run out completely. If you succeed, everyone wins! If even one sand timer runs out, everyone loses.
On your turn
Kites is played in real-time, meaning there are no pauses once the game begins. To start, the first player flips the white sand timer to begin the game. Players can now look at their hands. On your turn, play one kite card from your hand face-up in front of you. The color and pictogram(s) on the card indicate which sand timer(s) you must flip. If playing a card with a single pictogram, flip the matching colored timer or the white timer. If playing a card with two pictograms, flip both matching colored timers. You must flip the sand timers yourself, using both hands if necessary. You can only draw a new card from the central pile after you've finished flipping all required sand timers. The next player can start their turn as soon as you've finished flipping your timers, even if you haven't drawn a new card yet.
Scoring
Scoring in Kites is based on how many cards remain unplayed at the end of the game. After the game ends (either by winning or losing), count all the unplayed kite cards, including any remaining in players' hands and in the draw pile. Consult the scoring chart in the rulebook to see your team's performance level based on this total. A score of 0 unplayed cards means you achieved the highest level of success.
Game end
The game of Kites can end in two ways. You win if all kite cards (from players' hands and the draw pile) have been played before any sand timer runs out. You lose if any sand timer runs out completely, even if you have not yet played all the kite cards. The game ends immediately when either of these conditions is met.
Tips
Communication is key in Kites! Constantly alert your teammates when sand timers are running low or which timers you intend to flip on your turn. To add difficulty, you can introduce challenge cards into the game. There are three types: Storm, Tangled Lines, and Airplane. When a Storm card is drawn, you must announce 'Storm!' and on your next turn, you are obligated to play it and flip all sand timers. When a Tangled Lines card is drawn, you don't announce it immediately; on your next turn, you must play it, announce 'Tangled Lines!', and then exchange one card with the player to your left and one with the player to your right. When an Airplane card is drawn, you don't announce it; on your next turn, you must play it, announce 'Airplane!', and then no one can speak until that Airplane card is covered by another played card (or all Airplane cards are covered if multiple are in play).
