Setup

Place the game board, distribute player tokens, and shuffle the hexagonal tiles into two piles.

The rules, step by step

Setup
To set up, first choose who plays as land and who plays as sea. Place the scoring board (inside the box lid) next to the play area. Each player places their representative token on the '0' space of the score track. The starting tile, featuring a compass, is placed in the center of the table. The volcano/whirlpool tile is placed nearby. All other hexagonal tiles are shuffled and divided into two roughly equal face-down piles. Each player draws two tiles from these piles, looking only at the top side of each tile until it's their turn to play it.
Objective
The main objective of Land vs Sea is to score the most points by strategically placing hexagonal tiles to create and close off land and sea areas. Players also earn points by utilizing special tiles and by forming specific patterns with caravans, ships, mountains, and coral, depending on the chosen game variant.
On your turn
Starting with the land player (or the youngest player on the land team in team play), turns proceed clockwise. On your turn, you must choose one of the two tiles in your possession and place it adjacent to an existing tile on the map. The tile must be placed so that land borders land and sea borders sea. After placing a tile, you may activate any special actions depicted on it. Finally, you draw a new tile from either of the two face-down piles, ensuring you always have two tiles in hand for your next turn.
Scoring
When a land or sea area is completely enclosed by other tiles, it is scored. Each tile within the closed area grants one point to the player whose type (land or sea) matches the area. The player who placed the final tile to close the area also receives bonus points for any 'X' symbols within that area. Special tiles like the volcano/whirlpool are placed in empty six-sided holes of a single terrain type, granting points to the player who closes the hole. Optional scoring rules for mountains, coral, caravans, and ships can add further complexity and points.
Game end
The game concludes when all 60 hexagonal tiles have been placed on the table, including any tiles held by players. Once all tiles are placed and all final scoring is completed, players compare their total scores on the scoring track. The player with the highest score is declared the winner. In the event of a tie, the victory is shared among the tied players.
Tips
To maximize your score, always consider both sides of your tiles before playing to find the most advantageous placement. Strategically use special action tiles like 'play again' or 'steal a tile' to gain an advantage. When playing with optional rules, focus on creating long chains of mountains/coral or transport routes with caravans/ships to earn significant bonus points. Remember that the volcano/whirlpool tile is unique and can only be placed in a fully enclosed six-sided hole of a single terrain type.
