Setup
Place resources, time tokens, and market cards on the main board; each player gets a player board with an Indian and starting cards.
The rules, step by step
Setup
Set up the main board by placing resource tokens (wood, furs, food, tools) in their designated areas, along with crafted resources (canoes, horses). Place time tokens on their track. Shuffle the market cards and place five face-up, ordered by strength value (highest first), with the rest forming a draw pile. Each player receives a player board, one Indian token placed on their starting canoe, and three merchant boats, with the first boat pre-loaded with one tool, one fur, and one food. Players also receive a hand of starting character cards and place their explorer pawn on the starting space in St. Louis.
Objective
The primary objective is to be the first player to move their explorer pawn to the final camp space on the main board and successfully perform a 'camp' action without having any time tokens in their possession. If multiple players reach the end, the player who advanced furthest wins.
On your turn
On a player's turn, they must perform one mandatory action, which can be either playing a character card from their hand or placing an Indian token on an action space on the main board. After the mandatory action, the player may perform up to two optional actions: recruiting a new market card by paying its cost in tools and furs, or performing a 'camp' action. Playing a card or placing an Indian requires assigning 'force' using other cards from hand (discarded face-down for their Indian icons) or Indian tokens from the player's supply. The total force determines the number of times the action's effect is triggered.
Scoring
Lewis & Clark is not a point-scoring game in the traditional sense. The winner is determined by who first reaches the final camp space and meets the condition of having no time tokens. If multiple players reach the end in the same round, the player who advanced furthest on the track wins. If there's still a tie, the player with the fewest time tokens wins.
Game end
The game ends immediately when a player successfully performs a 'camp' action on the final camp space and has zero time tokens. If a player reaches the final camp space but has time tokens, they must continue to play rounds, trying to discard their time tokens through movement actions, until they can camp without any. If all players have performed a 'camp' action and no one has met the victory condition, the game ends, and the player whose explorer pawn is furthest along the track wins.
Tips
Effective resource management is crucial, as you'll need specific resources to move your explorer and recruit new cards. Pay close attention to the market cards, as they offer powerful actions and can be combined strategically. Managing your hand of cards is also key; decide when to play cards for their actions, when to discard them for force, and when to keep them for their resource icons. Be mindful of time tokens, as accumulating too many will hinder your ability to win, requiring extra movement actions to discard them.
