The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up the game, first place the island board in the center of the playing area. Then, populate the loot spaces on the board by drawing loot tokens from the bag. For a 1-player game, draw one token per space; for a 2-player game, draw three tokens per space. Place the money tray next to the board. Each player selects a ship color, takes the corresponding character deck, and places their reputation token on the '10' space of the reputation track. One player shuffles their character deck, draws six cards, and reveals them to all players. All other players then find the matching six character cards from their own decks to form their starting hands.
Objective
The primary objective of Libertalia: Winds of Galecrest is to accumulate the most doubloons (money) by the end of three voyages. Players achieve this by strategically playing character cards to collect loot tokens from islands and by managing their reputation, which also grants doubloons.
On your turn
Each day consists of three phases: Day, Dusk, and Night. In the Day phase, all players simultaneously choose one character card from their hand and place it face down in front of them. Once everyone has chosen, all cards are revealed and placed on the island spaces from left to right, in ascending order of their rank (the number in the top-left corner). If characters have the same rank, their position is determined by the players' current reputation. Starting with the leftmost character, players activate their character's Day ability. In the Dusk phase, players collect the loot token from the island space where their character is located. If a loot token has a Dusk ability, it is activated at this time. In the Night phase, any remaining characters on the island are discarded, and any loot tokens not collected are removed from the board.
Scoring
At the end of each voyage (after six days), players gain doubloons based on their current reputation level, as indicated on the reputation track. They also count the value of all loot tokens they have collected and add that to their doubloons. Certain character abilities and loot tokens may also provide additional doubloons or reputation during the game.
Game end
The game concludes after three complete voyages. After the final scoring of the third voyage, players tally their total doubloons. The player with the highest total amount of doubloons is declared the winner. In case of a tie, the player with the highest reputation wins. If there's still a tie, the tied players share the victory.
Tips
To succeed in Libertalia, it's crucial to understand the different character abilities and how they interact with loot tokens.
