The rules, step by step
Setup
At the start of Machi Koro, every player begins with the exact same setup: two starting building cards (labeled 1 and 2-3) and four currently undeveloped construction sites. These sites represent the goals you must achieve to win the game. Coins are also distributed to players to begin their economic journey.
Objective
The primary goal of Machi Koro is not to collect the most money or points, but rather to be the first player to successfully develop all four of your construction sites. It is a race to the finish where constructing these cards signifies your victory.
On your turn
A player's turn consists of rolling one or two dice, depending on their developed cards. Whatever number you roll, any buildings on the table that match that number might pay out. After payouts, the active player may choose to purchase a new building card or develop a construction site.
Scoring
Scoring in Machi Koro happens through card effects triggered by dice rolls. Some cards pay out on anyone's turn, while others only pay out on your own turn. Matching dice rolls to your building numbers lets you collect coins from the bank.
Game end
The game continues in rounds until one player is finally able to develop all four of their construction sites. Since one of the sites costs 22 coins, gathering enough money and managing your engine efficiently is crucial to triggering the end game.
Tips
Machi Koro is a light strategy game and a wonderful introduction to Eurogames. Balance your card purchases between immediate income generation and long-term improvements to ensure you can afford the expensive final construction sites.
