Setup
Shuffle all 105 cards, deal four face-up to each player as their reserve, and place the remaining cards face-down in the center as the draw pile.
The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up Mantis, first shuffle all 105 cards thoroughly. Then, deal four cards face-up to each player, forming their individual reserve. If any cards in a player's reserve have matching colors, stack them together in an overlapping fashion so that all cards are visible. The remaining cards are placed face-down in the center of the playing area, forming the draw pile. Each player should also designate a small area for their score pile, where cards will be kept face-down.
Objective
The objective of Mantis is to be the first player to collect 10 or more cards in your score pile. In a 2-player game, the objective is to collect 15 or more cards. The game can also end if the draw pile runs out, in which case the player with the most cards in their score pile wins.
On your turn
On your turn, you have two possible actions: score or steal. To perform either action, draw the top card from the face-down draw pile in the center of the table and reveal it. If you choose to score, you will attempt to match the color of the revealed card with cards in your own reserve. If you choose to steal, you will attempt to match the color of the revealed card with cards in another player's reserve.
Scoring
If you choose to score and the color of the revealed card (from the white side) matches any of the colors of the cards already in your reserve, you collect all cards of that matching color from your reserve, including the newly drawn card, and place them face-down into your score pile. If there is no match, the drawn card is simply added to your reserve, and your turn ends.
Game end
The game concludes immediately when a player successfully collects 10 or more cards in their score pile (or 15 in a 2-player game). If the draw pile runs out before any player reaches the target score, the game ends, and the player with the most cards in their score pile is declared the winner. In case of a tie, the tied player with the most cards in their reserve wins.
Tips
For a 2-player game, the winning condition is adjusted to 15 cards in the score pile instead of 10. Additionally, in a 2-player game, if you successfully steal cards from your opponent's reserve, you are granted an immediate extra turn. This allows for consecutive turns as long as you continue to successfully steal cards.
