In the C11th and the C12th large numbers of knights left England for the religious wars of the crusades to the holy land. by the 1300s more than 1500 castles had been built throughout the land knights had more peaceful interests. Heraldry was the order of the day and the rules of chivalry; Tournaments of Arms and jousting were popular pastimes.
