The rules, step by step
Setup
The Moonlight Whispers expansion introduces two new clans: the Tanuki (represented by grey meeples and torii) and the Kappa (represented by green meeples and torii). Each new clan comes with 10 meeples, 5 torii, and 3 unique starting cards. Additionally, the expansion includes new Yokai cards that can be hired for 2, 4, or 6 spirits, and three new island cards with day and night sides. Four new final objective cards are also added, featuring unique icon combinations for scoring. The game also comes with a rulebook in both Portuguese and English.
Objective
The overall objective of Night Parade of a Hundred Yokai: Moonlight Whispers remains consistent with the base game: to collect the most victory points by the end of the game. However, the new clans, Yokai, and island cards introduce additional strategies and scoring opportunities that players can leverage to achieve victory.
On your turn
During a player's turn, they can now interact with the new components. New Yokai cards can be contracted by paying 2, 4, or 6 spirits, adding powerful abilities to a player's parade. The three new island cards introduce a unique card-drawing mechanic: placing a torii on the first island allows a player to draw one Moonlight Whispers card, on the second island two cards (choosing one to keep and returning the other face down), and on the third island three cards (choosing one to keep and returning the others face down). These cards are then added to the player's parade.
Scoring
The expansion includes four new final objective cards. These cards feature specific icon combinations that players must aim to collect in their parade to earn victory points. The rulebook provides detailed explanations of how each of these new objective cards is scored, adding new strategic considerations for players throughout the game.
Game end
The game concludes either when a player successfully completes their final objective, or when the Yokai deck is depleted. Once either of these conditions is met, players proceed to the final scoring phase, where they tally their victory points from collected Yokai, completed objectives, and other game elements to determine the winner.
Tips
The Tanuki clan's unique ability, represented by a leaf symbol, allows a player to move an activated card from their parade to any inactive parade position, even if it's of a different type. This provides flexibility in managing parade order and activating specific card abilities. The Kappa clan's ability, represented by a slipper symbol, allows a meeple to become 'hidden' when placed on an island. To expel a hidden Kappa meeple from an island, an opponent must spend two 'hit' symbols, making it more challenging to remove them compared to regular meeples. These abilities introduce new tactical layers to the game, encouraging players to adapt their strategies based on the clans in play.
