Setup
Shuffle the 33 cards, remove 9, and place the remaining cards face down in the center; each player gets a number of counters based on player count (11 for 3-5 players, 9 for 6, 7 for 7).
The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up the game, first shuffle all 33 cards, numbered 3 to 35. Then, count out 9 cards and set them aside, as they will not be used in the current game. Place the remaining cards face down in a pile in the center of the table. Each player receives a starting number of counters: 11 counters for 3-5 players, 9 counters for 6 players, and 7 counters for 7 players.
Objective
The main objective of "No Thanks!" is to finish the game with the lowest possible score. This involves strategically deciding which cards to take and which to pass on, balancing the points on cards with the value of your counters.
On your turn
The oldest player starts the game by flipping over the top card from the center pile. On your turn, you have two options: either take the face-up card along with any counters currently on it, or say "No Thanks!" and place one of your own counters on the card, then pass the turn to the player on your left. This continues until a player decides to take the card.
Scoring
When the game ends, players calculate their scores. First, add up the points on all the cards you have collected. For any sequence of two or more consecutive numbered cards (e.g., 12, 13, 14), only the lowest card in that sequence counts towards your total points. After totaling your card points, subtract one point for each counter you still have in your hand. The player with the lowest final score wins the game.
Game end
The game concludes once the last card from the center pile has been taken by a player. At this point, all players proceed to calculate their final scores based on the cards they've collected and the counters they have remaining.
Tips
It is highly recommended to keep the number of counters you have hidden from other players. This adds a layer of strategy and uncertainty, as opponents won't know how many counters you have left to 'say no thanks' with, influencing their own decisions on whether to take a card or pass it.
