The rules, step by step

Setup
When starting Obsession, players first select a family, each offering slightly different starting bonuses. Each player begins with four family members and two random guests in their hand. The game board is set up with Country Estate Improvements, a Builders Market, and various tracks for rounds, reputation, and courtship phases.
Objective
The primary objective in Obsession is to accumulate the most victory points by the end of the game, thereby establishing your family as the most prestigious in mid-19th century England. Victory points can be gained through multiple avenues, encouraging diverse strategies.
On your turn
A player's turn involves hosting an activity or passing. To host an activity, select a Country Estate Improvement, invite the required guests from your hand, and provide the necessary servants. After the event, you gain rewards, and then have the option to purchase one improvement from the Builders Market. Servants used in an event become unavailable for the next round, moving to an 'expended service' box before rotating back to availability.
Scoring
Victory points are earned in several ways: improving your Country Estate by buying and using improvements, having prestigious guests in your family circle, completing objective cards, earning VP cards, and successfully dating one of the Fairchilds by the end of the game. Reputation also contributes to your final score, with higher reputation yielding more points according to a tiered chart.
Game end
The game concludes after 16 rounds, tracked on the game board. At this point, players calculate their total victory points. Points are awarded for guests in hand and discard piles, the value of their estate improvements, completed objective cards, their final reputation score, the number of servants they possess, every 200 pounds of money, and any Fairchilds they have successfully attracted. The player with the highest total victory points wins.
Tips
To maximize your score, strategically choose Country Estate Improvements: Sporting improvements are good for gaining money, Prestige improvements boost your reputation, Estate improvements help acquire new guests, and Service improvements provide staff and ongoing benefits. Pay attention to the required prestige for events and guests, as higher prestige allows for more valuable invitations. During courtship phases, aim to attract Fairchilds by having the most service points, as they offer significant victory points and other bonuses. Utilize special actions to borrow money, refresh servants, or refresh the Builders Market when needed, but be mindful of the prestige cost.
