Setup

Lay out letter cards by cost, fame cards in a pyramid, and give each player a starting deck of basic letters and wild cards.

The rules, step by step

Setup
To set up, lay out the letter cards in rows based on their cost (2-10 coins). Place the fame cards in a pyramid shape, with the lowest cost cards at the bottom. Each player receives a starting deck consisting of basic letter cards (T, R, S, N, D) and five wild cards. These decks are shuffled and players draw five cards to form their initial hand. In the cooperative variant, a special 'public letter' card is drawn and placed face-up, indicating the minimum word length required to discard it.
Objective
In the cooperative game, the players' collective objective is to purchase all of the fame cards from the pyramid before the game ends in a loss. This requires careful planning and efficient word-building to generate enough money to acquire the increasingly expensive fame cards.
On your turn
On your turn, you must form a valid word using the letter cards in your hand and optionally one public letter card. The length of your word is compared to the current public letter card. If your word meets or exceeds the required length, you discard the public letter and draw a new one. After forming a word, you can activate abilities on the cards used in your word in any order. Finally, you use the total money value of your word (and any money generated by abilities) to buy new letter cards from the display or fame cards from the pyramid. Any cards not used in your word are discarded, and you draw back up to your hand limit (usually five cards, but this can be modified by card abilities).
Scoring
The money value of your word is determined by the numbers in the top-left corner of the letter cards used. Some cards have abilities that can increase this value or provide other benefits. In the cooperative game, the money generated is used collectively to purchase new letter cards to improve your deck or fame cards to advance towards victory. There is no individual scoring in the cooperative mode; success is shared.
Game end
In the cooperative game, the game ends in a win if players successfully purchase all of the fame cards from the pyramid. The game ends in a loss if, at the end of any player's turn, a cube must be placed on a fame card, and that card already has four cubes on it. Cubes are placed on fame cards when a player fails to purchase a fame card during their turn, indicating a missed opportunity.
Tips
To succeed in Paperback's cooperative mode, prioritize buying letter cards that offer strong abilities and high money values to quickly cycle through your deck and generate more purchasing power. Coordinate with your teammates to ensure you're working towards common word-building goals and efficiently clearing fame cards. Don't be afraid to discard cards that don't fit your current strategy to improve your hand for future turns. Managing the placement of cubes on fame cards is crucial to avoid an early loss.
