Setup
Set up the map using the provided templates, each player gets a command board, 7 dice, and 5 quantum cubes; place 1 die on dominance and research, 2 dice as extra ships, and roll the remaining 3 dice as starting ships; the player with the lowest sum on their starting ships goes first.
The rules, step by step
Setup
First, build the game map using the provided templates, choosing a layout based on the number of players. The color of the planets doesn't matter, but ensure the planet numbers match the template. Each player receives a command board, 7 dice of their color, and 5 quantum cubes. Place one die with side 1 up on your dominance track and another on your research track. Two additional dice are placed beside your command board as extra ships, which can be unlocked later. Roll your remaining three dice; these are your starting ships. The player with the lowest sum on their three starting ships goes first. If there's a tie, those players roll a separate die to break it. The first player places one quantum cube on a starting planet, then places their three starting ships horizontally or vertically around that planet. Subsequent players do the same in turn order. Shuffle the dark gambit cards and light command cards separately, then deal three of each type face-up beside the map. These are called advance cards.
Objective
The primary objective in Quantum is to be the first player to successfully place all of your quantum cubes onto the game map. Cubes can be placed either by constructing them on planets or by achieving a state of dominance through successful combat encounters.
On your turn
The game proceeds in turns, starting with the first player and continuing clockwise. Each player's turn consists of two main phases. Phase 1 is the 'Actions' phase, where a player can take up to three actions and use any special abilities of their ships. Phase 2 is the 'Advance Cards' phase, where players may be rewarded with advance cards if they have either researched a breakthrough or placed a quantum cube during their turn. After Phase 2, the turn passes to the next player.
Scoring
Quantum cubes are placed on the map through two primary methods: 'Construct Cube' action, which costs two actions and allows you to place one quantum cube from your command board onto an empty space around a planet, provided the sum of ships around it matches the planet's number. Alternatively, if your dominance die reaches 6 through combat, you immediately place a quantum cube. The first player to place all their quantum cubes wins the game.
Game end
The game concludes immediately when any player successfully places their final quantum cube onto the map. That player is declared the winner.
Tips
When setting up, carefully choose your starting planet and ship placement to establish early control. During your turn, consider using the 'Reconfigure' action to reroll ships for better values, or 'Deploy' to bring ships from your scrapyard back into play. The 'Construct Cube' action is crucial for winning, but remember it costs two actions. 'Research' helps you gain advance cards, which can provide powerful immediate or permanent abilities. In combat, remember that the attacking ship cannot move further after attacking, and the lowest sum wins, with the attacker winning ties. Utilize your ship's unique special abilities (Strike, Transport, Warp, Modify, Maneuver, Free Reconfigure) strategically, as they do not count as actions. Gambit cards offer immediate effects, while Command cards provide permanent advantages, so choose wisely based on your current game state and long-term strategy.
