The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up the game, each player takes one score sheet and a writing utensil. The six dice are placed in the center of the playing area. Players then decide who will be the first active player. This player will be the first to roll the dice and initiate the game.
Objective
The objective of Qwixx is to score the most points by marking as many numbers as possible on your score sheet. Players aim to complete rows and avoid failed throws to achieve the highest total score.
On your turn
The active player rolls all six dice. As the first action, all players, including the active player, can choose to mark the sum of the two white dice on any colored row they wish. As the second action, only the active player can choose to add the value of one white die to the value of one colored die and mark that sum in the corresponding colored row. If the active player marks no numbers during their turn, they must mark one of the four 'failed throw' boxes, each costing -5 points.
Scoring
Numbers must be marked from left to right in each of the four colored rows. You are allowed to skip numbers, even multiple at once, but any skipped numbers cannot be marked later. To mark the last number in a colored row (12 for red/yellow, 2 for green/blue), a player must have already marked at least five numbers in that specific row. If a player marks the last number in a row, they also mark the lock symbol next to it, which closes that row for all players. The corresponding colored die is then removed from the game. Points are awarded based on the number of marked boxes in each row, as indicated on the score sheet. Each failed throw box marked results in -5 points.
Game end
The game ends immediately when one player marks their fourth 'failed throw' box, or when two of the four colored rows are closed by any players. Once the game ends, all players calculate their total score by summing the points from their marked numbers in each colored row and subtracting points for any failed throws. The player with the highest total score is declared the winner.
Tips
To excel at Qwixx, focus on completing rows efficiently, especially those that offer higher points for fewer marked numbers. Pay attention to your opponents' progress to anticipate which rows they might close, and consider closing rows yourself to deny them points. Balancing the risk of skipping numbers against the reward of higher sums is key. Avoid marking failed throws as they significantly reduce your score.
