The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up the game, arrange the board and components as described in the rulebook for a two-player game. For the solo mode, follow the specific setup instructions provided in the solo rulebook, which primarily involves setting up for two players with minor adjustments for the bot player. Ensure all resource tokens, cards, and player components are in their designated starting positions.
Objective
The objective of Rats of Wistar is to accumulate the most victory points by the end of the game. Points are earned through various actions such as exploring different rooms in the house, digging out new tunnel spaces in your burrow, building beds for new workers, completing missions, and acquiring invention cards. Strategic planning and efficient resource management are key to outscoring your opponent (or the bot in solo mode).
On your turn
A turn consists of placing your chief token on one of the available action spaces on the action wheel. You can choose any open space, but you cannot place your chief token on the same action space twice in a single round. After placing your chief token, you perform the main action associated with that space, followed by a bonus action. The strength of your main action is determined by the number of worker tokens you have in the corresponding area (underground, field, or forest). After your turn, the bot player takes its turn, which is managed by drawing and resolving action cards.
Scoring
Scoring occurs both during the game and at the end. During the game, you score points by completing missions, which involve meeting specific requirements and placing your cubes on the mission card to claim rewards. At the end of the fifth round, final scoring takes place. You will sum up points from the highest-valued revealed bedroom tiles in your burrow, the highest-valued revealed room tiles you've dug out, any points gained from invention cards (some provide end-game points based on collected items), and points for any leftover resources you possess. The bot also scores similarly based on its progress and cards.
Game end
The game concludes after five full rounds. Each round is tracked by flipping over room tiles on the main board; once all five round tiles have been revealed and resolved, the game ends. After the final round, players proceed to the end-game scoring phase where all accumulated points are tallied. The player (or you, in solo mode) with the highest total victory points is declared the winner.
Tips
To excel in Rats of Wistar, consider strategically managing your worker placement to maximize the strength of your actions. Pay close attention to the action wheel to anticipate your opponent's moves and secure desired spaces. Utilize the anytime actions effectively, such as converting resources into wild tokens, to adapt to changing needs. Prioritize completing missions that align with your overall strategy and provide valuable rewards or unlock cost reductions. In solo mode, understanding the bot's predictable movement and action priorities, as dictated by its action cards and player board, is crucial for planning your turns and optimizing your score.
