The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up Reef Project, place the central map board in the middle of the play area and distribute player boards, ships, and starting resources. Players place their ships on the starting island and set their score markers at zero. Each player begins with a set of reef balls, starting crew members, and two drafted mission cards, with remaining components organized near the board for easy access.
Objective
The main objective is to act as scientific vessels cleaning coral reefs from pollution. Players strive to accumulate the highest number of victory points by completing mission cards, advancing on research and diver tracks, cleaning ocean sectors, and successfully managing crew activations.
On your turn
On your turn, you must choose between two main actions: travel or recharge. When traveling, you may optionally deploy a reef ball, move across connected routes by spending energy, and optionally play a mission card matching your destination. Recharging allows you to recover energy and resources based on your score track position.
Scoring
Victory points are scored dynamically throughout the game from completed mission cards, research and diver track milestones, and sector cleaning bonuses. At game end, players score additional points for remaining resources, completed sets, and secret objective cards.
Game end
The game triggers its conclusion as soon as the first player reaches or exceeds 45 victory points. The current round is completed so all players get an equal number of turns, followed by final end-game scoring to determine the winner.
Tips
Plan your movements carefully around the map to overlap with mission card requirements. Balancing resource gathering, crew activations, and research progression is essential for outscoring your opponents.
