Setup
Place starting area tiles, then shuffle and place remaining area tiles face down. Randomly place large location tiles, then shuffle and display citizen cards and slot module tokens. Stack minor artifacts with the endgame tile on top, place major artifacts, and set up player boards with pawns and starting cards.
To set up, shuffle the five starting area tiles and place them face up on their designated spaces on the game board. Then, shuffle the remaining 25 area tiles and place them face down on the board. Shuffle the large location tiles and randomly place one in each corner of the game board with a random side up, returning unused tiles to the box. Shuffle the citizen cards (excluding starting ones) to form a face-down deck, then reveal five face-up. Shuffle the slot module tokens to form a face-down pile, then reveal five face-up. Create a stack of minor artifacts, placing the endgame tile on top. Place major artifacts in their designated area, using only those corresponding to the player count. Each player takes a player board and a tribe board (sun side up), placing machine track markers on space 1, resource markers on space 0, and progress markers as indicated. Place population figures and buildings on the tribe board. Place one pawn on the score track's zero space and another on the hibernation track's starting space. Each player receives a set of starting citizen cards (with the same letter on the back), placing three face up in their active area and three face down in their resting area. Each player also takes one secret artifact card. Finally, players receive starting resources based on player order, and the starting player is determined.
Objective
In Revive, each player leads a tribe with the goal of rebuilding the world according to their ideals. This involves exploring new areas, constructing buildings, and populating locations. The ultimate objective is to accumulate the most victory points by the end of the game, which are earned through various actions and conditions.
On your turn
The game is played in turns, starting with the first player and proceeding clockwise. On your turn, you may either perform up to two standard actions or choose to hibernate. Standard actions include playing a card from your active area to a card slot (gaining resources or effects), using your unused switch token (gaining a basic resource), exploring unexplored areas (flipping tiles face up by paying range and tile costs), populating location spaces (placing a population figure by paying costs and unlocking special abilities), or building structures (placing small or large buildings on sand spaces by paying costs and gaining rewards from adjacent terrain/water spaces). Additionally, you may perform any number of free actions, such as converting crystals to basic resources, opening crates, or activating machines (once unlocked) by spending energy. Action cubes can be used to track your two standard actions.
Scoring
At the end of the game, victory points are tallied from several sources. You score points based on the position of your progress markers on your player board. Each population figure on your tribe board scores victory points indicated beneath it. You also gain points from large location tiles on the main board if you have population figures there. Points are awarded from your secret artifact card based on the number of collected artifacts of a specific color and a connected condition. Finally, you score one victory point for every five remaining resources (rounding down) and potentially from opened crates or other game effects. The player with the highest total victory points wins the game.
Game end
The game concludes immediately when any player takes the last major artifact token from the game board, or when the endgame tile (on top of the minor artifact stack) is taken. Once this occurs, all other players get one final turn to complete their actions. After everyone has taken their last turn, the game proceeds to the final scoring phase to determine the winner.
Tips
Strategic use of free actions is crucial; convert crystals to needed resources or open crates at opportune moments. When exploring, consider the range cost and the benefits of the revealed tile. Populating areas not only earns points but also unlocks powerful special abilities on your tribe board. Building structures provides immediate rewards from adjacent terrain and water spaces, so plan their placement carefully. In campaign mode, remember that new rules and components are introduced gradually, so adapt your strategy as the game evolves. Pay attention to the machine tracks, as advancing on them unlocks new machines and provides ongoing benefits.
