Setup
Players build a wobbly skyscraper by stacking walls and roofs, placing their superhero rhino on the highest roof.
The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up Rhino Hero, players first shuffle the roof cards and deal a starting hand of five cards to each player. The remaining roof cards form a draw pile. The wall cards are placed in a separate pile. The superhero rhino meeple is placed on the starting roof card, which is usually a special base card or the first roof card played. The game is then ready to begin, with players aiming to build a tall, stable skyscraper.
Objective
The objective of Rhino Hero is to be the first player to successfully play all of your roof cards, or to be the last player remaining after all other players have caused the tower to collapse. It's a game of dexterity and careful planning, where the goal is to outlast your opponents by maintaining the structural integrity of the growing skyscraper.
On your turn
On your turn, you must first place walls on the current highest roof card, following the wall placement symbols shown on that card. After placing the walls, you then play one of your roof cards from your hand onto those walls. The roof card you play will have new wall placement symbols, which dictate how the next player must place their walls. Finally, if the roof card you played has a rhino hero symbol, you must move the superhero rhino meeple to the newly placed roof. If the tower collapses at any point during your turn, you lose.
Scoring
Rhino Hero is primarily a dexterity game and does not involve traditional scoring. The game is won by the player who successfully places their last roof card, or by the last player remaining if all other players have caused the tower to collapse. There are no points to accumulate; success is determined by skill and stability.
Game end
The game ends in one of two ways: either a player successfully places their very last roof card, winning the game, or the tower collapses. If the tower collapses, the player whose turn it was when the collapse occurred is eliminated. The game continues until only one player remains, or until a player successfully plays their last card. The player who caused the collapse is considered to have lost that round.
Tips
When playing Rhino Hero, it's crucial to pay close attention to the wall placement symbols on the current roof card, as these dictate where you can place your walls. Try to anticipate future moves and consider how your placement might affect the tower's stability for the next player. Sometimes, it's better to play a roof card that forces an opponent into a difficult position, even if it's not the most optimal card for your own hand. Practice and a steady hand are key to mastering this wobbly skyscraper challenge.
