Setup
Players choose a starting player by dealing fate cards, then select factions, receiving corresponding components. The game board is built by placing setup quest cards, map tiles, home realm markers, dragon and false rune tokens, neutral units, and city tokens.
The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up the game, first choose a starting player by dealing one fate card to each player; the player with the highest number is the first player. Starting with the first player, each player chooses a starting faction and receives their faction sheet, plastic figures, home realm map tile, activation markers, stronghold tokens, development tokens, victory card, and order cards, all matching their chosen faction's color and symbol. Next, players build the game board in eight steps: separate and shuffle all setup quest cards, then deal two face-up to each player. Each player receives map tiles corresponding to their setup quest cards, assembling any puzzle pieces. Starting with the first player, players take turns placing a tile in the center of the table, ensuring at least two areas touch two areas of a previously placed tile, and that mountain and water borders do not touch other mountain and water borders. The first player takes a number of home realm setup markers equal to the number of players and places them around the board, ensuring each marker touches three borders but not mountain or water borders, and has at least three areas between it and another home realm marker. Each player takes a dragon rune token and one false rune token. Starting with the first player, players place each rune into an area face down, not in an area already containing a rune or next to a home realm marker. Starting with the player to the left of the first player and proceeding clockwise, choose a home realm marker and replace it with your home realm, placing it in the same spot. Place the number of neutral units on each space as printed in each area. Finally, randomize the city tokens and place one face-up on each city space.
